A fiber spinning process comprising the steps of providing a polymer solution, which comprises at least one weakly interacting polymer dissolved in at least one weakly interacting solvent to a spinneret; issuing the polymer solution in combination with a blowing gas in a direction from at least one spinning nozzle in the spinneret and in the presence of an electric field; forming fibers and collecting the fibers on a collector.

The present invention is directed to a method for preparing a nanofiber web by feeding a polymer solution, which has at least one polymer dissolved in at least one flammable solvent to a spinning nozzle, discharging the polymer solution from the spinning nozzle into a blowing gas or gas mixture that will not support combustion, wherein the blowing gas exits a jet at a lower end of the spinning nozzle, to form polymer nanofibers and collecting the polymer nanofibers on a collector under the spinning nozzle, wherein an applied high voltage differential is maintained between the spinneret and the collector.

A process for stripping chemically bonded spinning solvent from a solution-spun nonwoven web comprising the steps of providing a nonwoven web comprising solvent-laden polymeric fibers having average fiber diameters of less than aboutmicrometer, and transporting the nonwoven web through a solvent stripping zone wherein infrared radiation irradiates the nonwoven web and a solvent stripping fluid impinges on the nonwoven web in order to reduce the solvent concentration of the fibers to less than about 10,000 ppmw.

Infrared solvent stripping process

Filtration media are disclosed for use in high efficiency air filters for filtering particulate matter in air. The media make use of at least one layer of fibers having a diameter less than 1000 nanometers sandwiched between two scrim layers to achieve high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration performance at relatively low pressure drops.
