Fluoroionophores and their use in optical ion sensors

Fluoroionophores that are functionalised with reactive groups and correspond to the formula I&mdash;R &mdash;F&mdash;R &mdash;G, wherein I is a monovalen residue of an ionophore, wherein F is a divalent residue of a fluorophore, wherein G is a functional group and R and R are each independently of the other a direct bond or a bridging group. The fluoroionophores may be covalently bound to carrier materials and are used as active components in polymer membranes of optical sensors for the detection of ions. The sensors are distinguished by a long usable life and a high degree of sensitivity.

Covalently immobilized fluoroionophores as optical ion sensors

A water-insoluble copolymer which is composed of (a) from 39.9 to 60% by weight of N,N-dimethylacrylamide or N,N-dimethylmethacrylamide; (b) from 60 to 39.9% by weight of N-alkylated acryl amides or N-alkylated methacryl amides; (c) from 0.1 to 0.7% by weight of a proton-sensitive fluorophore which is covalently bonded to the copolymer; and (d) from 0 to 20% by weight of a diolefinic crosslinking component. The copolymer is used in the form of a membrane on a transparent support material as an optical sensor for ionic strength-independent pH value determination.

Optical sensor formulations comprising polymeric sensing formulations and methods of predictably making optical sensor formulations, for, e.g., measuring O,levels in patient blood samples. These formulations may be, e.g., deposited as a membrane on light-transmissive substrates. In an embodiment, O,-sensing formulations may be made by a process including selecting a first homopolymer comprised of first monomeric units, the first homopolymer having a first Perm,value; selecting a second homopolymer comprised of second monomeric units, the second homopolymer having a second Perm,value that is different from the first Perm,value; and copolymerizing the first and second monomeric units to obtain a copolymer having an intermediate Perm,value, i.e., between the two Perm,values, the intermediate Perm,providing the desired Perm,for the desired oxygen sensing formulation. By adjusting the relative amounts of the first and second monomeric units, a series of polymers having a desired range of intermediate permeability values (and hence Stem-Volmer characteristic k,values) may be obtained.

The working electrode may be defined by an open printed region of the dielectric, or by a needle-punched or laser-burned hole or opening in the dielectric which exposes a small region of one of the conduct strips. A solid electrolyte contacting the electrodes is covered by a semipermeable membrane which may comprise an acrylonitrile butadiene copolymer or an acrylate-based copolymer. A sample chamber is defined by the membrane, a cover member, and a gasket therebetween, and has a volume of from about 1 to about 2 .mu.l. The gasket is formulated from the highly cross-linked polymerization product of epichlorohydrin. All sensor components are selected such that a sensor operable for at least 2 days under normal conditions is produced.
