An improved method and system for heating and cooling an electronic device, when internal temperatures are below safe operating ranges. To do so, the system selectively heats or cools each zone of the electronic device. This may be done by individual heaters and/or cooling system for each separate zones. Alternatively, or in addition too, the system can selectively open and close baffles, causing fresh ambient air to enter and/or recirculate heated air in a device's enclosure. This keeps sensitive components of the computing device, such as processors and memory from suffering damage, by operating them at temperatures that are either too cold or too warm.

Independent active cooling and heating control loop per component

An improved method and system for controlling the powering-on of an electronic device when initially the internal temperature is below a safe threshold. The method and system can preheat the electronic device until it is at a safe temperature in which to safely power-on the electronic device. Alternatively or in addition, the method and system can alert a user if the temperature is below a threshold and proceed to power-on when the temperature is above the threshold.

Low temp power state handling

Embodiments of the invention may provide an improved method for pre-heating an electronic device such as an information handling system, when internal temperatures are below safe operating ranges. To do so, the system selectively heats the entire device or select zones of the electronic device for a predetermined amount of time when the system is restarted after a period of time sufficient to bring the system to ambient temperatures. The predetermined amount of time is determined based on measured ambient temperatures. Using a table that corresponds the ambient temperatures to a time that a component needs to heat up to a nominal temperature in a zone, the predetermined time can be calculated.

Predictive open loop pre-heating of electronic devices in cold environments

A computing device includes a top cover, a heater apparatus, a plurality of temperature sensors, and a heating control component. The heater apparatus includes a heater component and a connector, and the heater component is affixed to the top cover. The plurality of temperature sensors are operatively connected to the heating control component. The heating control component configured to manage the heater apparatus using the plurality of temperature sensors.

Modular, expandable rack assembly physically supports components of information handling systems. Base structure of interconnected panels form volumetric space having front section and rear section, with opposing side panels forming front access space and rear access space, respectively, having width that supports insertion of standard full-width IT gear. Guides are located within interior surfaces of opposing side panels at the front section to rear section. Block chassis has frame that provides block height to enable insertion of at least one layer of up to N side-by-side fully functional IT gears within block chassis, which in turn is physically inserted into front section of base structure and held in place by opposing guides of opposing side panels. When N is 3, three side-by-side one-third width IT sleds, each containing IT gear, are inserted in respective one-third width IT bays of block chassis.

In accordance with the present disclosure, a system and method for providing a battery back-up unit (BBU) for a rack-level power infrastructure is described. The system may include a chassis sized to fit within a commodity power supply unit (PSU) slot in a power distribution unit (PDU). A battery may be disposed within the chassis, and at least one power module coupled to the battery. The system may also include a power module controller coupled to the at least one power module, and a form-factor connector coupled to the power module controller and the at least one power module.

A rack-based information handling system (IHS) includes a rack containing at least one chassis having a plurality of bays open to laterally receive sleds that contain a plurality of information technology (IT) components that, when operational, enable the rack to function as an IHS. A storage sled including a stationary tray received in the chassis and a moveable trace received in the stationary tray. One or more hot swap bays that are horizontally arrayed in the storage sled in less than one (1) Server System Infrastructure (SSI) rack unit of height, wherein the moveable tray is extendable from the rack to a service position to expose all of its hot swap bays. Storage devices are insertable into a respective one of the hot swap bays of the storage sled. Each storage device may include a latching handle to lift and downward position the storage device in the corresponding hot swap bay.

A rack apparatus includes a frame having (i) a power and cooling area and (ii) a block chassis forming one or more information technology (IT) bays that enable insertion of IT components. A plurality of IT components are contained within a component cabinet inserted in the block chassis. When operational, enable the rack apparatus to function as one of an information handling system (IHS) and an extension of a modular, scalable/expandable rack-based IHS. A busbar physically located at a back of the block chassis within the power and cooling area and enables direct coupling to one of another busbar and a power source to supply power to the plurality of IT components from a power interface board. A block controller is contained in the block chassis and communicatively coupled to the other IT components. The block controller performs all localized, block level control for the rack apparatus.

Modularly-expandable mini-rack server system

In accordance with the present disclosure, a scalable and modular rack-level power infrastructure is described. The power infrastructure may include a power distribution unit (PDU), which receives alternating current (AC) power from an external power source. The PDU may be coupled to a busbar and output DC power to the busbar. The busbar may be coupled to a server within a rack-server system and provide DC power to the server. Additionally, the infrastructure may include a battery back-up unit (BBU) element coupled to the busbar. The BBU element may charge from and discharge to the busbar.

Rack-level scalable and modular power infrastructure

DCMI functionality is extended to platforms of a datacenter by integrating a management controller in each of plural platforms and interfacing the management controllers with a management server through a network. End users interface with platforms of the datacenter using DCMI protocol communications. The management server supports communication with management controllers by receiving DCMI messages and translating the DCMI messages to a text-based protocol for communications with the management controllers. In one embodiment, the management controllers push sensor information for their associated platforms to a sensor cache of the management server so that the management sensor references the cache to respond to DCMI requests for sensor information.

Platform independent management controller

A scalable power and management module (PMM) includes a chassis configured to be slideably inserted into a power and management bay within a rack. The PMM provides scalable power distribution and rack-level management functions that are shared by several information technology (IT) gear. Several power supply units (PSUs) are mounted in the chassis. The number of PSUs is scalable based on the number of IT gear. A management controller is mounted in the chassis to provide rack-level management of the IT gear and at least one associated block controller within the rack. A power controller is mounted in the chassis and is communicatively coupled to the PSUs and the management controller. The power controller controls power functions of the PMM.
