A radial magnetic bearing may include an annular housing including a radial outer wall disposed between radially outer ends of two annular axial end plates and an isolation sleeve which may include a helical arrangement of a plurality of ferromagnetic wires. The isolation sleeve may be an annular structure extending axially between the two annular axial end plates, and the isolation sleeve and the annular housing may define an isolation cavity therebetween. The radial magnetic bearing may also include an isolation sleeve retainer configured to maintain a position of the isolation sleeve between the two annular axial end plates. The radial magnetic bearing may further include a plurality of laminations disposed adjacent the isolation sleeve and about a shaft of the rotating machine. A gap may be defined between the plurality of laminations and the isolation sleeve.

A system and method for controlling the acoustic signature of a turbomachine having a plurality of valves wherein an operating load is identified and an arc of admission across a plurality of nozzles is associated therewith. A valve sequencing scheme is selected and implemented to activate the arc of admission for a particular operating load so as to minimize valve noise by adjusting valves simultaneously rather than consecutively.

Valve sequencing system and method for controlling turbomachine acoustic signature

A cooling system for a rotating machine, such as a centrifugal compressor. Specifically, the cooling system may be configured to cool radial and axial magnetic bearings in the rotating machine and the bearing control system that controls said bearings. The cooling system includes canned magnetic radial bearings on each end of the rotor and a canned bearing control system. The canned bearings and canned bearing control system may be filled with a dielectric cooling fluid and in fluid communication with each other via sealed conduits. Accordingly, the radial magnetic bearings and the bearing control system may be entirely immersed in the dielectric cooling fluid to regulate heat generation. An axial magnetic bearing may also be canned and fluidly coupled to the cooling system to immerse the axial magnetic bearing in the dielectric cooling fluid.

A rotor system for a rotating machine, including a rotating shaft, an auxiliary bearing, and a primary bearing configured to provide a bearing and seal combination. The auxiliary bearing may include a support structure extending around a circumference of the rotating shaft, such that an annular gap is defined between the support structure and the rotating shaft when the primary bearing supports the rotating shaft. The auxiliary bearing may also include a first pedestal extending radially-inward from the support structure, and first and second beams extending from opposite sides of the first pedestal in a plane perpendicular to an axis of the shaft. The auxiliary bearing may further include a first roller operatively coupled to the first beam, and a second roller operatively coupled to the second beam, such that the first and second rollers are configured to engage the shaft.

Planetary-type auxiliary bearing for a hydrostatic primary bearing

Disclosed is a snubber bearing assembly for protecting a rotor and accompanying bearings from radial and axial rotor transient overload events. The bearing assembly includes a snubber journal mounted on the rotor and a snubber housing having a radial snubber bearing mounted on its inside surface, the radial snubber bearing being radially-offset from an outer radial surface of the snubber journal. Lubricating plugs are disposed within a plurality of holes defined in the radial snubber bearing, the lubricating plugs being configured to provide lubrication between the radial contact surface and the outer radial surface during a radial rotor transient overload event. The snubber housing can also include opposing axial snubber bearings that have lubricating plugs disposed within holes defined therein also. The opposing axial snubber bearings are configured to be axially-offset from inner axial surfaces defined by the rotor journal and provide lubrication therebetween during an axial rotor transient overload event.

Self-lubricating snubber bearing

A system and method are provided for an auxiliary bearing system. The system and method may include a sleeve extending circumferentially about a rotary shaft and coupled thereto. The system and method may also include an axial journal disposed circumferentially about the rotary shaft and adjacent an axial end of the sleeve. The system and method may further include a locking nut coupled to the rotary shaft. The locking nut may be configured to force the axial journal to engage the axial end of the sleeve to at least partially resist axial movement of the axial journal along the rotary shaft. The system and method may further include a gripping assembly disposed circumferentially about the rotary shaft. The gripping assembly may be configured to engage the axial journal to at least partially resist radial movement of the axial journal relative to the rotary shaft.

A diaphragm for a steam turbine is disclosed that has at least one arc of admission. The arc of admission has a plurality of nozzles arranged about the circumference of the diaphragm and are configured to eject a working fluid at succeeding rotor blades axially-spaced from the diaphragm. The flow area of the first few nozzle vanes in the arc of admission is gradually increased along the arcuate length of the diaphragm, thereby mitigating the load impulse absorbed by each rotor blade as it enters the arc of admission. The flow area of the last few nozzle vanes in the arc of admission is gradually decreased so that each rotor blade does not suddenly go from full load impulse to zero and thereby contribute to the fatigue of the rotor blade and create unwanted noise.

An auxiliary bearing including a support structure extending at least partially around a circumference of a shaft. A first pedestal may extend in a radially-inward direction from the support structure. First and second beams may extend from opposite sides of the first pedestal in a plane perpendicular to an axis of the shaft. The loading device housing has an inner surface and a fluid inlet configured to receive a pressurized gas. The disk is located outside of a turbomachine housing in which the turbomachine is disposed and is coupled to a shaft of the turbomachine, proximal an axial end of the shaft. The disk is received in the loading device housing and is axially moveable in the loading device housing while the shaft is rotating. The non-contacting seal is disposed between the inner surface and the disk.

An auxiliary bearing including a bearing mount disposed circumferentially about a shaft. A support wall may extend radially inward from the bearing mount, and the support wall may define a first annular cavity. An outer race may be coupled to a radially inner surface of the support wall. An inner race may be rotatably coupled to the outer race, and a plurality of rolling elements may be disposed between the inner and outer races. A pool of lubricant may be disposed within the first annular cavity, and at least a lowermost one of the plurality of rolling elements may be at least partially disposed in the pool.
