An airboat and drive system for operating a pair of counter rotating air propellers that propel an airboat are described. An engine is mounted low in the hull of an airboat to lower the center of gravity and provide a more stable airboat. The drive system is connected to the engine through a drive shaft. The drive system includes a transmission, interconnecting frame, and counter rotating air propeller drive. The interconnecting frame mounts the counter rotating air propeller drive above the transmission providing proper clearance for the air propellers with the hull of the airboat. The transmission and counter rotating air propeller drive are connected through an interconnecting drive shaft. The amount of noise from a conventional belt drive is reduced. The modular design and simplified drive system is easier to assemble and align.

Counter rotating air propeller drive system

An airboat and selectable drive system for an airboat are described. The airboat may be configured for mounting an engine either high or low in the hull of an airboat. The selectable drive system is connected to the engine. The selectable drive system includes a transmission interconnected to an air propeller drive. A clutch has three positions to include forward, neutral, and reverse. The air propeller drive rotates the air propeller in one of two directions based upon the selected position of the clutch. The drive system has the capability to rotate air propellers at different speeds. The reverse speed of rotation of the air propellers may be higher or lower than the forward speed of rotation. The modular design and simplified drive system is easier to assemble and align for both configurations.

Selectable air propeller drive system

Devices and methods for paying off an elongate material between two coaxially aligned packages without interruption. The elongate material from a first wound package is connected to the elongate material of a second wound package by joining the tail end of the first wound package to the head end of the second wound package. Each wound package includes the elongate material having a body portion and a tail portion wound about a core. Also, each body portion has the head end at an outer diameter of the respective package and each tail portion has the tail end at an inner diameter substantially corresponding to a diameter of the core. Further, the path of the wound elongate material is transitioned from the first wound package to the second wound package by providing transition device having a supporting surface.

Devices and methods for unwinding elongate materials

A filament applicator includes a frame which defines a machine axis through which an elongate element may be guided at an application station at which filaments are to be applied to or introduce into the elongate element, such as an optical cable. A plurality of chambers are provided, each of which defines a chamber axis substantially parallel to the machine axis and mounted on the frame for rotation about the machine axis. Each chamber is substantially closed and has a panel at an axial end of the chamber which is movable between an open position for inserting and removing a wound package of filament material within the chamber and closed position for substantially sealing the chamber and preventing air turbulence within the chamber upon rotation about the machine axis. Each panel has an opening therein through which the filament material can be removed from the wound package. Each filament is guided from an associated opening in a door or panel of a chamber to the machine axis for winding about or introduction into the elongate element. By sealing the chambers during operation, the applicator speed can be significantly increased, above 500 rpm, while maintaining control over the relatively flimsy, lightweight and soft filaments, such as synthetic KEVLAR fibers.

Apparatus for applying soft filaments to continuous elongate articles

Spooling apparatus and method utilizing reels having generally radial slots in the end flanges. A filament is guided to a selected reel by a reciprocating traverse sheave. The traverse sheave is moved to one axial end of the full reel to arrange the filament in a winding reference plane adjacent to the inside surface of the flange at that end. A transfer sheave, which moves between the two reels in the winding reference plane engages the advancing filament and deflects it proximate to the empty reel to position a portion of the filament in a direction substantially tangent with the periphery of the empty reel while winding of the filament continues to the other reel. A throw pin momentarily deflects the filament from the winding reference plane to a cutting reference plane on the other side of the flange which places the filament in a position to be snagged by a snagger that rotates with the empty reel and cut on a stationary cutting element in the cutting reference plane. As soon as the filament is cut the snagged end is guided onto a spiral track, outside of the reel, to guide the filament from the point of snagging at the periphery of the flange to a point corresponding to the surface of the reel drum. A long end is formed on the track within one turn of the reel, and the filament is thereafter guided through the radial slot to be deposited on the empty reel drum for continued spooling. By leading the long end of the filament through a slot in the flange directly onto the drum, the filament is subjected to minimum stresses, deformations and bending while providing desired long ends.

Apparatus for and method of continuously spooling a filament on reels

An apparatus for making helically wound interlocked flexible pipe includes a rotating head mounted for rotation about a main shaft. Two supply spools of strip material are mounted on the rear side of the rotating head, a take off guide beam assembly being used to take off flat strip material from one of the spools, and guiding it to the rotating head. The rotating head is mounted on the main shaft for rotation therewith and supports a tool head assembly including a roller forming mill for forming the strip material. The strip is guided from a point behind the rotating head to a point in front of or downstream from the rotating head along the shaft. A face plate assembly, which supports the pressure rollers for closing and interlocking the successively adjacent turns of the formed strip, is axially spaced from the tool head assembly. A constant supply or reservoir of formed strip material, in the form of a loop in a substantially circular path, is provided to insure proper supply of formed strip material on demand to the pressure rollers. A sensor is used to monitor the instaneously contractions and expansions of the supply loop from its nominal size, such variations being utilized to modify and adjust the instaneous speed of rotation of the forming rollers. A rewinding system is used to rewind flat strip material on the other non-feeding supply spool. The apparatus assures simple and convenient start up of production of flexible pipe, and efficient operation without buckling or damage to the strip material.

Apparatus for making helically wound interlocked flexible pipe

A high speed rigid strander is described that has a rotatably mounted cage which includes a plurality of bobbin support members which are parallel to and angularly spaced about the axis of rotation of the cage. Each support member includes a locking mechanism for simultaneously locking or releasing an entire row of bobbins, each of which is spaced from the axis of rotation and has its longitudinal axis oriented generally radially or at an angle normal to the strander axis. Wire guides associated with each bobbin fly the wires off the bobbins under the action of external pulling forces without requiring the bobbins to rotate. Fly-off is generally radially inwardly against the action of centrifugal forces and the wires are guided towards the strander axis and then parallel thereto so that the wires from all of the bobbins can be brought to an end of the rotating cage and wound about a core wire. Also described is a loading and unloading system which can advantageously be used with the stranders of the present invention.

An actuatable member of a pintle assembly is slidably movable along an axis for movement relative to a reel-carrying cradle support member between reel engaging and disengaging positions. Compression springs are used to urge the actuatable members of the illustrated embodiments toward the reel-engaging positions. Locking devices, which can move between locking and releasing positions, are each arranged to directly cooperate and block the movement of an actuatable member to a disengaging position thereof in the locking position of the locking device. The locking devices may include blocking elements such as rigid displaceable balls or pins, or may include cam arrangements and the like. A fluid pressure system is provided to act at least on the locking devices and release the same when fluid pressure is applied. Advantageously, the fluid pressure system also acts on the actuatable member to move the same to the reel disengaging position upon release of the locking device. The described embodiments provide fail-safe operation during reel engagement independently of the fluid pressure provided by the fluid pressure system.

A high speed rigid-type strander includes a main shaft or body mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis with the core wire advanced through the strander substantially along its axis of rotation. Bobbin supporting members are fixedly mounted externally on the shaft or body for rotation therewith and for mounting the bobbins in positions displaced from the axis of rotation. The bobbins are mounted with their longitudinal axes oriented at substantial angles from the axis of rotation of the shaft or body, and preferably at an angle substantially normal thereto. The bobbins can be mounted to either fly-off the wire in a generally radially outward direction or in a generally radially inward direction with the bobbins stationary about their longitudinal axes. A strander of the above general type is also described which can be used in either a fly-off mode of operation or in a traditional pay-off mode wherein the bobbins rotate about their own axes.

A fail-safe locking device for reel support systems is described which is suitable for use with reels such as those used with wire stranders and similar machines. In the embodiments described, a pintle supporting shaft member is normally biased by a spring to an extended position. A safety plunger is provided which has a stepped exterior surface so as to define a recess or step. The safety plunger is normally biased by a spring to a disabling position to urge a blocking member, such as a hardened steel ball or sphere, into the path of movement of an abutment surface of the shaft member to automatically and positively lock the shaft member and the pintle. In the locked condition, the plunger member and, therefore, the pintle, cannot accidentally release the reel. The shaft member and the safety plunger are provided with bearing surfaces against which a fluid medium under pressure may be applied by an operator of the machine to, firstly, move the safety plunger from the disabling to an enabling position to permit the ball or sphere to drop into the recess or notch and, therefore, out of the path of movement of the shaft member abutment surface. Once freed, the plunger member is urged by the fluid medium under pressure to a retracted or releasing position. Two opposing pintle assemblies may be mounted on a cradle typically used in wire stranders, and pneumatic pressure is used by the operator to release the fail-safe locking system to accept or release a reel from the cradle. Electrical means may be used for monitoring the position of the safety plunger and for disabling the machine or issuing an alarm upon movement of the safety plunger to its enabling position and, thereby, permitting the plunger member and pintle to move to a retracted position. The fail-safe locking device is also shown on other reel-supporting systems such as bobbin supporting shafts.

The invention provides a dual function safe deposit apparatus which may be operated either without a key to receive envelopes and deposit them in one compartment, or with a key to receive wallets and deposit them in another compartment. The apparatus has an opening to receive deposits, the opening being equipped with a withdrawable shield having a slot for the receipt of envelopes, withdrawal of the shield to provide a larger opening for wallets being key controlled and linked with movement of a diverter member which diverts wallets, deposited while the shield is withdrawn, into a separate compartment from that into which envelopes, inserted through the slot in the shield, are delivered.
