This disclosure is directed to a high solid, low viscosity carbonless paper gelatin base microcapsule system producing microcapsules having sizes characteristically from about 3 to about 10 microns (micrometers) and being characterized as single oil drop microcapsules. This system of microcapsules is further characterized by a high solids content, viz., from about 25 to about 50 weight percent solids, in combination with a low viscosity, viz., ranging from about 10 to about 60 centipoises and having a high microcapsule payload (core concentration by weight based on total capsule weight), e.g., of 80+wt. % and preferbly about 90 weight percent and higher, in aqueous suspensions. The combination of high solid content and high microcapsule payload, with low viscosity enables delivery of a high concentration of solid microcapsules at reasonably high coating speeds via comparatively inexpensive conventional pumping systems and paper coating systems. The present gelatin based microcapsule system is arrived at by blending low Bloom strength gelatin, e.g., about 100 to 200 Bloom strength, with a blend of at least two anionic phase inducers comprising (1) sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP), and at least one of: (2) a copolymer of vinyl methyl ether and maleic anhydride (PVM/MA), (3) a copolymer of ethylene and maleic anhydride (E/MA), (4) gum arabic and (5) carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC).

Preparation of high solids, low viscosity carbonless paper gelatin base

This disclosure is directed to a high solid, low viscosity carbonless paper gelatin base microcapsule system producing microcapsules having sizes characteristically from about 3 to about 10 microns (micrometers) and being characterized as single oil drop microcapsules. High solids, low viscosity carbonless paper gelatin base microcapsule

This disclosure is directed to the preparation of dry microencapsulated product, having an oily core material with microcapsule cell wall materials having a first cell wall of gelatin/polyvinyl methylether maleic anhydride copolymer (PVMMA)/carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) which is prehardened (cross-linked) with a material selected from the group consisting of formaldehyde, glyoxal and glutaraldehyde to which there is grafted formaldehyde and resorcinol which is then crosslinked with formaldehyde and urea, and aqueous formulations containing them. Approximately 97% of these microcapsules have a size less than 100 and more characteristically having a particle size peak distribution of 30 to 40 microns (microcapsular diameter). These microcapsules contain less than approximately 3 wt. % free oil and more characteristically less than about 1 wt. % free oil (non-micro-encapsulated oil) and have less free (unreacted) formaldehyde which can be extracted with water, than do prior art microencapsulated emollient materials. The dry microcapsules of this invention are free-flowing and have a silky-smooth feeling similar to that of talcum powder.

Microcapsules are prepared en masse which contain a substantially water-insoluble core and, incorporated at their surface under a thin film of hydrophilic polymeric colloid, a substantially water insoluble finely divided additive. In the preparation, a primary microcapsule is made in an aqueous vehicle to surround the water-insoluble core, the finely divided additive is then added under stirring to form a fine dispersion and cationic hydrophilic polymeric colloid solution is added to cause the colloid to envelop the additive and deposit it on the capsule wall under a thin film.
