Esters of lipoic acid with a glyceride are produced in high yield by lipase catalyzed transesterification. The esters are generally characterized by Formula 1: wherein at least one but no more than two of R, R, and Rare a lipoic acid derivative selected from a lipoate moiety of the formula: or a dihydrolipoate moiety of the formula and the other of the R, R, and Rare independently selected from Cto Cfatty acid moieties or OH, with the proviso that at least one of the R, R, and Ris a fatty acid moiety.

A method of making a compound having the structural formula:  wherein at least two of R, R, and Rare non-fatty acid carboxylates, and the other of R, R, and Rare each either a C-Cfatty acid moiety, OH, or a non-fatty acid carboxylate, wherein the first and second non-fatty acid carboxylates, when present, are the same or different, comprising (a) partially deacylating a triacylglycerol so as to provide a mono- or diacylglycerol, (b) reacting in a reaction mixture an acyl ester of the phytochemical with said mono- or diacylglycerol in the presence of a esterase catalyst under conditions that permit transesterification of said ester with said mono- or diacylglycerol, and (c) recovering said compound from said reaction mixture.

Methods of making compositions comprising a UV-Absorbing chromophore

Lipase-catalyzed transesterification reactions yield novel ferulyl-substituted or coumaryl-substituted acylglycerols with properties suitable for use as sunscreen agents having broad spectrum UV protection. These agents have the advantage of being synthesized from natural materials, while providing a value-added use for vegetable oils. They are readily incorporated into standard sunscreen formulations.
