A well completion method and apparatus comprises a pipe string having a bottom attached boring bit and scraper. Above the bit at designated well fluid production locations, perforation assemblies are integrated into the pipe string. Each perforation assembly comprises a by-pass circulation mandrel and a perforation gun. The circulation mandrel is secured at opposite distal ends in threaded Y-adapter boxes. The perforating gun is secured in collar bores respective to the opposite end Y-adapters.

One trip system for circulating, perforating and treating

An electro-mechanical wireline assembly as shown for anchoring a wireline tool string in place during a wellbore under balanced well conditions. The assembly includes an upper connection for connection to the wireline leading to the well surface and a lower connector for engaging a wireline tool. An outer mandrel is attached to the lower connector. An inner mandrel is carried at least partly within the outer mandrel and is capable of axial movement within the outer mandrel. A slip gripping assembly is carried on the outer mandrel and includes slips which are normally biased radially inward but which can be moved radially outward for engaging a surrounding wellbore and holding the wireline tool string in place. An electric motor assembly is carried on the wireline assembly between the upper and lower connectors. The electric motor assembly is actuable by an electric current supplied from the well surface through the wireline to effect axial movement of the inner mandrel relative to the outer mandrel to expand the gripping slips in a radial direction between a start position and a set position. The electric motor assembly can be switched in order to reverse the direction of axial movement of the inner mandrel relative to the outer mandrel to retract the gripping slips and return the slips to the start position. A back-up manual release means is provided for manually retracting the gripping slips radially inward upon completion of wellbore operations.

Electro-mechanical wireline anchoring system and method

Redundant explosive transfer between two explosive carrier devices is accomplished by inserting into a transfer sub or gun head a non-moveable explosive means for receiving the detonating cord which, at its first end, establishes a gap from an adjacent positive alignment insert (PAI) and wherein the length of explosive means is sufficient to assure detonation between the explosive means and the detonating cord in the event that the detonating cord shrinks due to the temperature of well applications. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, a positive alignment insert consists of an aluminum insert housing having an annular region of imbedded explosive. The annular region of the explosive-filled insert is typically annularly lined with an aluminum sleeve for protecting the explosive within and maintaining an annular region of sufficient diameter to allow for the passage and placement of the detonating cord and booster. A positive alignment insert is inserted into both the crossover pin-and-box and the grooved tandem, or into similar transfer subs, or into gun head adapters. A stop is provided in the crossover sub, which maintains the minimum gap required to transfer a high order detonation from the explosive in the first positive alignment insert to the explosive in the second positive alignment insert. Thus, when positive alignment inserts are used within a transfer sub, the original gap between bi-directional boosters is not as critical because detonation will propagate from one detonating cord to the next by propagating through the explosive within the first positive alignment insert to the explosive in the second positive alignment insert.

Methods are provided which permit pressure tested multiple perforating gun modules to be interconnected into gun assemblies, without disturbing any pressure-bearing seals of the modules. Prior to assembling the gun assembly, the seals of the modules are pressure tested. The pressure tested modules are then connected to each other without disconnecting or otherwise breaking any of the pressure-bearing seals of the modules.

Method for creating leak-tested perforating gun assemblies

A perforating gun connector is provided for downhole use in oil and gas fields. The perforating gun connector includes a stinger and a stinger receptacle. The stinger is adapted to be stabbed into the stinger receptacle. A loaded engaging member movable between a running position before the stinger is stabbed into the stinger receptacle and a latched position when the stinger is stabbed into the stinger receptacle to latch the stinger and the stinger receptacle together. A release member retains the loaded engaging member in the running position. When the stinger is stabbed into the stinger receptacle and a set force is applied to the stinger and stinger receptacle, the release member releases the loaded engaging member to move to the latched position and latch the stinger and the stinger receptacle together. According to a second aspect of the invention, the perforating gun connector is releasable, further including a releasable stop member to stop the engaging member in the latched position. When the stop member is released, the engaging member moves to a released position such that the stinger and stinger receptacle are separable. According to a third aspect of the invention, a perforating gun connector is provided with an internal explosive transfer system for transferring the detonation signal from one perforating gun, through the perforating gun connector, and to the next perforating gun. In addition, a method of connecting a first perforating gun section to a second perforating gun section is provided.

Latch and release perforating gun connector and method

A tool connector is provided for downhole use in oil and gas fields. The tool connector includes a stinger and a stinger receptacle. The stinger is adapted to be stabbed into the stinger receptacle. A loaded engaging member movable between a running position before the stinger is stabbed into the stinger receptacle and a latched position when the stinger is stabbed into the stinger receptacle to latch the stinger and the stinger receptacle together. A release member retains the loaded engaging member in the running position. When the stinger is stabbed into the stinger receptacle and a set force is applied to the stinger and stinger receptacle, the release member releases the loaded engaging member to move to the latched position and latch the stinger and the stinger receptacle together. According to a second aspect of the invention, the tool connector is releasable, further including a releasable stop member to stop the engaging member in the latched position. When the stop member is released, the engaging member moves to a released position such that the stinger and stinger receptacle are separable. According to a third aspect of the invention having particular application to perforating gun sections, a tool connector is provided with an internal explosive transfer system for transferring the detonation signal from one perforating gun, through the perforating gun connector, and to the next perforating gun. In addition, a method of connecting a first tool section to a second tool section is provided.

Latch and release tool connector and method

A method of stimulating a well subsequent to the formation of perforations whereby, subsequent to the perforating, pressure is suddenly applied to the perforations at a pressure above the fracturing pressure to extend created fractures in the formation. A bridging means is utilized to isolate the upper portion of the casing from a lower portion having perforations. The casing above the bridging means is charged with a stimulation fluid. At a predetermined pressure the bridging means releases the stimulation fluid into contact with the perforations to substantially simultaneously create or initiate a fracture into the formation from each perforation.

Overbalance perforating and stimulation method for wells

A bi-directional explosive transfer apparatus for use in connecting and orienting perforating guns in a well. The apparatus includes a connector having first and second housing portions which are pivotally attached to one another. First and second explosive devices in the connector provide a bi-directional explosive path between perforating guns joined by the connector. At least one orienting fin is attached to the perforating guns to position the guns off-center so that they will orient themselves by gravity in a deviated well section. The swivel connection provided by the connector allows the guns to rotate individually as necessary and relative to the other guns. A method of perforating a well using the apparatus is also disclosed.
