Methods and compositions for detection of microbial contaminants in peritoneal dialysis solutions are provided. A novel cause of aseptic peritonitis is provided&#x2014;aseptic peritonitis associated with gram positive microbial contamination of a dialysis solution. Peptidoglycan is a major component of a gram positive bacterial cell wall and thus can serve as a marker for gram positive bacteria. In this regard, testing for peptidoglycans can be utilized to effectively prevent peritonitis in patients that use the peritoneal dialysis solutions, such as peritoneal dialysis solutions that contain a glucose polymer including an icodextrin and the like.

Methods and compositions for detection of microbial contaminants in peritoneal dialysis solutions are provided. The methods and compositions employ modified bioburden testing and the detection of peptidoglycan. A novel cause of aseptic peritonitis is provided&#x2014;aseptic peritonitis associated with gram positive microbial contamination of a dialysis solution. Peptidoglycan is a major component of a gram positive bacterial cell wall and thus can serve as a marker for gram positive bacteria. A dual-filled twin bag, a packaging including the twin bag, and a method for forming the packaged twin bags are provided. Each of two bags, a solution bag ( ) and a drain bag ( ) for a system used for a peritoneal dialysis procedure, are filled, at least partially, with a solution ( ). A tubing set ( ) connects the two filled bags ( ) and may also be filled with solution ( ) which is added to the bags ( ) and the tubing set ( ) during the manufacturing process. Alternatively, the tubing set ( ) may be filled with air. The tubing set ( ) is sandwiched between the solution bag ( ) and the drain bag ( ) and subsequently packaged in an overpouch ( ). The method for forming the package including the bags filled with solution is simplified and the overall package size is reduced due to the sandwiched tubing set ( ) between the solution bags ( ) and the provision of solution in both bags ( ).

The present invention provides improved methods for manufacturing solutions including medical solutions. To this end, in an embodiment, a method for preparing a medical solution is provided comprising the steps of: placing a solution in a gas permeable container; and allowing carbon dioxide to permeate through the container until a desired pH is achieved.
