A cost effective ferritic stainless steel exhibits improved corrosion resistance comparable to that observed on Type 304L steel. The ferritic stainless steel is substantially nickel-free, dual stabilized with titanium and columbium, and contains chromium, copper, and molybdenum.

Cost-effective ferritic stainless steel

An austenitic stainless steel ammunition cartridge includes an outer region and a base, wherein the outer region is about 50%-80% of the thickness of the base, which serves to minimize the sidewall ironing required to form the cartridge. The cartridge blank can be formed by spin forming, compression forming, grinding, or a combination thereof. Tooling to form the insert can include at least a pair of blocks and inserts, at least one insert defining a centrally positioned aperture.

Contoured thickness blank for ammunition cartridges

A stainless steel sheet suitable for use in the manufacture of an exhaust component. The steel sheet has at least one surface pretreated with a protective coating resistant to delamination at temperatures up to about 540.degree. C. including an inner inorganic portion and an outer organic portion. The inorganic portion includes at least 50 mg/m.sup.2 of a chromium based conversion coating having a thickness no greater then 0.02 mm. The conversion coating contains particulate silica with the weight ratio of chromium to silica within the range of 1:1 to 2:1. The outer organic portion includes a silicone paint containing 40-60 wt. % silicone resin. The silicone paint is dried at a temperature less than 300.degree. C. in less than one minute and then coated with a copolymer of a thermoplastic acrylic and a lubricant or a polymeric olefin. The acrylic copolymer contains 5-70 wt. % of the lubricant and the polymeric olefin contains 90% olefin resin. The lubricant coated steel sheet then is dried at a temperature of a 25.degree.-120.degree. C. for less than one minute to form a film thickness of 0.0005-0.020 mm, having a coefficient of friction of no greater than about 0.05 and a weight of 10-5000 mg/m.sup.2. The dried silicone paint covered by the dry lubricant film is tack-free, impervious to moisture, oil, dirt, and the like with the silicone coated steel sheet ready for forming into an exhaust component with minimal delamination of the dried silicone paint without additional external lubricant being required on the sheet.

F.) consisting essentially of from about 0.01% to about 0.30% carbon, about 2% maximum manganese, greater than 2.35% to about 4% silicon, about 3% to about 7% chromium, about 1% maximum nickel, about 0.15% maximum nitrogen, less than 0.3% aluminum, about 2% maximum molybdenum, at least one element selected from the group of niobium, titanium, tantalum, vanadium and zirconium in an amount up to 1.0% and the balance essentially iron.

An austenitic stainless steel having high strength, good hot workability, good corrosion resistance, and freedom from embrittlement both in the cold-worked and stress-relieved condition and in the heat affected zone of weldments, consisting essentially of 0.06% maximum carbon, about 0.2% to 3.0% manganese, about 21% to 24.5% chromium, about 10% to 17% nickel, about 0.15% to 0.40% nitrogen, about 1.5% maximum silicon, about 2% to 4.5% molybdenum, about 0.06% maximum phosphorus, about 0.35% maximum sulfur, residual columbium with less than about 0.04% carbon and about 0.1% to 0.6% columbium with carbon exceeding about 0.04%, and balance essentially iron.

High strength austenitic stainless steel exhibiting freedom from

A low cost austenitic stainless steel having a high work hardening rate and good ductility if drastically cold reduced, consisting essentially of, in weight percent, 0.05% maximum carbon, 1.5% to 3.0% manganese, about 0.06% maximum phosphorus, about 0.035% maximum sulfur, about 1% maximum silicon, about 15% to about 20% chromium, 3% to 4.7% nickel, 1.75% to 3% copper, 0.10% to 0.30% nitrogen, up to about 0.3% columbium, titanium, tantalum or mixtures thereof, and balance essentially iron. The steel has particular utility in fabrication of cold headed fasteners.

A ferritic steel having improved creep or sag resistance and oxidation resistance at temperatures ranging from about 732.degree. to 1093.degree. C. after a final anneal at 1010.degree. to 1120.degree. C., together with good weldability, the steel consisting essentially of, by weight percent, from about 0.01% to 0.06% carbon, about 1% maximum manganese, about 2% maximum silicon, about 1% to about 20% chromium, about 0.5% maximum nickel, about 0.5% to 2% aluminum, about 0.1% to 0.05% nitrogen, 1.0% maximum titanium, with a minimum titanium content of 4 times the percent carbon plus 3.5 times the percent nitrogen, about 0.1% to 1.0% columbium, with the sum total of titanium plus columbium not exceeding about 1.2%, and remainder essentially iron. In the form of cold reduced strip and sheet stock the steel has particular utility in motor vehicle components.

Ferritic steel alloy with improved high temperature properties

Internally nitrided ferritic stainless steel cold reduced strip and sheet and products fabricated therefrom having an elevated temperature creep strength and oxidation resistance superior to AISI Type 316 austenitic stainless steel, and good room temperature formability. A non-hardenble AISI Type 400 series ferritic stainless steel containing a nitride former (titanium, zirconium, hafnium, columbium, vanadium, tantalum or rare earth metals) in excess of the amount required to react completely with residual nitrogen and carbon in the steel is reacted with nitrogen internally by heat treatment in a nitrogen-hydrogen atmosphere at a temperature of at least about 800.degree. C but below that at which austenite will form under conditions precluding formation of chromium nitrides, chromium oxides, and austenite.
