A method for producing a laminated embossed web includes the steps of: (a) providing a first web and at least a further web, (b) embossing the first web with a first pattern of embossments, each embossment comprising a top and a side, (c) providing an adhesive with an electrostatic charge, (d) directing the adhesive to the tops of the embossments, and (e) combining the webs.

A method of cleaning a blade of a log saw of a converting line comprises applying a cleaning agent to a saw blade. The saw blade is adapted to cut a log of web material into rolls as the log of web material advances on a conveyor. In an another step of the method the log is advanced on the conveyor for cutting with the saw blade. In another step of the method, the saw blade is cleaned by cutting the log with the saw blade with the cleaning agent applied to the saw blade.

A system has first and second winding drums and a core feeder for inserting a core into a winding nest for forming a convoluted roll. The leading edge of the web is engaged with a threading belt and directed around the first winding drum and through the winding nest to a position where the leading edge is beyond where the core feeder inserts the core into the winding nest thus providing an excess portion of the web between the leading edge and the core feeder core insertion position. A thread-up core is inserted into the winding nest and rotated with the winding drums so that the excess portion moves around the thread-up core. The leading edge is separated from the threading belt, the excess portion of the web is wound around the thread-up core, and the web from the supply is wound around the thread-up core.

Apparatus and processes for producing paper roll products with spaced core sections. A core substrate is arranged on a mandrel, and then divided into a plurality of core sections. The core sections are then separated from each other on the mandrel to form gaps between the core sections. Paper web material can then be wound onto the separated core sections to form a log of rolls. The log is then cut into final paper roll products.

An apparatus and method for sharpening a disc blade includes a grinding wheel mounted on a housing. The housing is mounted on a drive shaft so that the housing rotates with the drive shaft but can move axially relative to the drive shaft. A transversely extending projection on the housing extends into a space between two axially spaced spacers on the drive shaft. A spring is positioned between each spacer and the projection for resiliently biasing the housing in an axial direction.

The invention provides a new latch mechanism which is controlled by a camshaft which is mounted axially in the bedroll and by a servo motor which rotates the camshaft. The servo motor normally rotates the camshaft in the same direction and at the same speed as the bedroll. When the web is to be severed, the speed of the servo motor is either increased or decreased to rotate the camshaft relative to the bedroll. The rotation of the camshaft allows push rods in the bedroll to move radially inwardly to release the severing and transferring mechanism. Cam followers for the severing and transferring mechanism engage a stationary cam and control the movement of the mechanism. After the web is severed and transferred, the camshaft is rotated to force the push rods radially outwardly to relatch the severing and transferring mechanism.

A surface winder includes first and second winding rolls for winding a web on a center member, a stationary surface spaced from the first winding roll for rolling a center member on the stationary surface, and a pinch pad for pinching the web against a pinch surface upstream of the center member and thereby severing the web. The first winding roll is provided with a high friction surface, and only a short length of web needs to be stretched between the pinch surface and the first roll to tension and sever the web. The severed web is wound on the center member as the center member rolls on the stationary surface.
