A voice transmission system for a protective face mask is provided, comprising a voice transmitter attached to an external portion of the face mask, a radio receiver, and a two-way radio. The voice transmitter is attached to an external portion of the face mask and transmits the voice of a user of the face mask via a short range radio signal. The radio receiver receives the short range radio signal output by the voice transmitter, processes the short range radio signal, and outputs an audio output signal. The two-way radio (i) receives the audio output signal from the radio receiver, amplifies the audio output signal, and transmits the amplified audio output signal to a remotely located receiver, in a transmitting mode, and (ii) receives a broadcast signal from a remotely located transmitter in a receiving mode. A voice actuated switch switches the two way radio between receiving and transmitting modes. The transmitter transmits the short range radio signal in the ultra high frequency (UHF) radio range, and the receiver downconverts the short range radio signal from the UHF radio range to the audio frequency range.

Wireless voice transmission system

A voice transmission system for a protective respirator, having a face mask with an inhalation port and a filter attached to the inhalation port, is provided. The voice transmission system comprises a microphone assembly adapted to be located between the inhalation port and the air filter, the microphone assembly including a spacer for separating the filter from the inhalation port and a microphone extending therefrom and into an interior space of the face mask, and a combined amplifier/loudspeaker assembly remotely connected to the microphone. The spacer of the microphone assembly provides an airtight seal between the filter and the face mask and includes a one-way inhalation valve. The spacer is provided with an outer surface configuration which matches the face mask on one side and the filter on another so that the microphone assembly may be attached intermediate the face mask and the filter without using any additional fasteners.

Voice amplification adapter assembly for face mask

A voice transmission system for a conventional gas mask or face mask includes an amplifier body and a remote microphone assembly. The amplifier body encloses an amplifier electronic components assembly, a speaker and one or more batteries, and is designed to be attached with a belt clip to the belt of a user. The microphone assembly is electrically connected by a flexible cord to the amplifier assembly and is designed to be removably coupled to the face mask. The microphone assembly includes a microphone and a microphone adapter. The microphone adapter includes a resilient mounting bracket which can be easily coupled to and uncoupled from the exhalation passage of the mask without penetration or structural modification of the mask such that the microphone is proximate a check valve in the exhalation passage of the mask. The microphone is designed to receive a person's voice through or around the check valve in the exhalation passage of the mask and communicate a signal to the amplifier assembly. The amplifier assembly then amplifies the voice signal, and the speaker externally transmits the signal.

An electro-thermal actuator has a boiler chamber in which a working fluid is heated to increase its pressure and a variable volume chamber defined in part by a rolling diaphragm. When the working fluid is heated to a sufficient temperature, the pressure within the variable volume chamber becomes large enough to force a spring-loaded piston rod out of the actuator by the rolling motion of the diaphragm. The boiler chamber communicates with the variable volume chamber through a flexible partition containing a normally closed opening consisting a single slit. The flexible partition absorbs external forces applied to the piston rod when it is extended without the rupture of any actuator parts. In addition, the flexible partition produces improved actuator response time.

Electro-thermal actuator

A self-limiting electro-thermal actuator, capable of improved response time and continuous energization operation to produce a mechanical output uses plural heaters, e.g. a resistance heater and a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) heater, connected in series electrically. The actuator includes a boiler chamber, a thermally expansible working medium in the boiler chamber, a movable member responsive to expansion of the working medium to provide a mechanical output from the actuator, and a heater assembly for heating the working medium. The heater assembly includes the series-connected resistance electrical heater and PTC material heater. The electrical resistance of the PTC material increases with increasing temperature to limit current flow to the resistance heater. The heater arrangement produces improved response time over use of a PTC heater alone permitting actuators to be employed in applications for which known actuators are too slow.

Self-limiting thermal fluid displacement actuator

An electro-thermal actuator includes a valve in a partition between a boiler chamber containing the fluid and a variable volume chamber formed in part by a diaphragm. Such valve consists of a bore through the partition which is normally closed by a limited portion of the spring biased diaphragm, the bore being opened when the boiler chamber fluid pressure at the limited diaphragm portion overcomes the spring immediately to expose the entire diaphragm to such relatively high pressure rapidly to drive the same through the expansion stroke.

Electro-thermal actuator with valved boiler configuration

A partitioning sleeve is positioned in the main body of a thermal actuator to form a separate internal liquid reservoir from which fluid may be supplied to the actuator heater. The heater is part of a heater sub-assembly that is sealed in an opening formed in the main body of the actuator so that the coil-type electric resistance heater is accurately positioned for submersion in liquid in the variable volume chamber formed in the main body of the actuator. Moreover, the recycling or cool down time for the thermal actuator is reduced by thermal transfer between an appreciable contacting surface area of an extensible diaphragm that partly forms the actuator chamber and a guide cap that also supports and guides the diaphragm during its extension to enlarge the variable volume chamber.
