The present invention relates to a storage-stable fluorescent whitener formulation, comprising a compound of formula 1, a process for their preparation and their use.

The present invention relates to a mixture of fluorescent whitening agents comprising 11 to 20% by weight of a compound of formula (1), and 80 to 89% by weight of a compound of formula (2), wherein Rdenotes hydrogen, C-Calkyl, C-Caryl or C-Caralkyl and X is a bivalent radical of formula (3), (4) or (5) compositions containing the mixture and the use of the compositions for whitening synthetic fibers, in particular, polyester.

A liquid fluorescent whitening agent formulation comprising: a) a compound of formula (1), in which R represents hydrogen, 1-5 C-alkyl, 1-5 C-alkoxy or halogen, M represents hydrogen, an alkaline- or alkaline earth-metal, or ammonium; b) a polyhydroxy compound; c) 5 to 95% water, whereby the ratio of the compound of Formula (1) to the polyhydroxy compound is between 10:90 and 90:10 parts by weight and the total weight of these compounds in the formulation is between 5 and 95% and, optionally, auxiliary stabilizing agents and the use thereof for the manufacture of detergents with improved shade consistency.

A liquid fluorescent whitening agent formulation comprising: a) 10 to 20% of a compound of formula (1) in which R represents hydrogen, 1-5 C-alkyl, 1-5 C-alkoxy or halogen, M represents hydrogen, an alkaline- or alkaline earth-metal, or ammonium; b) 20 to 50% of a non-ionic surfactant; c) 20 to 40% of a polyhydroxy compound; d) 0 to 20% of a glycol compound and e) 1 to 50% water and use thereof for improving the whiteness aspect of detergents.

The present invention provides a hydrate of the 4,4'-di-triazinylamino-2,2'-di-sulfostilbene compound having the formula: ##STR1## in which M and M.sub.1 independently represent hydrogen, an alkaline-, an alkaline earth metal or ammonium, x is a number within the range of from 1 to 30, and the crystal form of the hydrate (I) being characterized by an X-ray diffraction pattern which is essentially as set out in the accompanying FIGS. 1 to 11; or a mixture containing one or more of the hydrates of the 4,4'-di-triazinylamino-2,2'-di-sulfostilbene compound having the formula (I); processes for the preparation of the new hydrates; and the use of the new hydrates for the preparation of concentrated aqueous formulations of fluorescent whitening agents.

There is provided a white crystal form of the compound having the formula: ##STR1## whose crystal form is characterised by an X-ray diffraction diagram which is essentially as shown in Table I, II or III. Also provided is a formulation comprising from 10 to 85% by weight of the white crystal form of compound having the formula (1) and from 90 to 15% by weight of a polyhydroxy compound, preferably glycerine.

Accordingly, the present invention provides a method for the fluorescent whitening of paper comprising contacting the paper surface with a coating composition comprising a fluorescent whitening agent having the formula: ##STR1## wherein M is hydrogen, an alkali metal, preferably sodium, ammonium or magnesium; or comprising contacting the paper in the size press with a combination of the compound of formula (1) and an auxiliary selected from a sequestering agent and a dispersing agent and/or an emulsifier.
