In an arrangement at a draw frame including a suction device for removing dust, fiber dust and the like, in which a funnel and a pair of draw-off rollers are present at the outlet of the draw frame immediately after a web-guiding element, the suction removal device is able to encompass the region between the outlet of the funnel and the nip between the draw-off rollers. In order to catch and remove waste that is released effectively, the flow channel of the suction removal device is able to substantially encompass the intake region of the funnel and projects laterally beyond the intake region of the funnel.

A draw frame has a drawing mechanism comprising at least two pairs of rollers to which the fibre slivers are fed by a plurality of supply rollers mounted on a feed table. The fibre slivers&#x2014;seen in a top view&#x2014;run next to one another and towards one another laterally, and a guide element is provided between a feed table and the drawing mechanism, the lateral faces of which guide element are capable of directing the incoming fibre slivers laterally. In order to allow uniform transfer of the slivers and to enable the slivers to be oriented substantially in a plane, a sliver-guiding device is arranged across the width upstream of the guide element at a spacing therefrom at which the fibre slivers are arranged substantially in a plane, the fibre slivers passing through underneath and in contact with the sliver-guiding device.

An apparatus for measuring the thickness of a plurality of side-by-side running slivers includes a supporting surface guiding the side-by-side running slivers thereon in a single plane; a holding member; and a plurality of sensor elements movably secured to the holding member to be movable in a direction transverse to the plane. Each sliver is contacted by a separate sensor element for causing excursions thereof by thickness fluctuations of the running sliver. Each sensor element is yieldingly pressed against a respective sliver, and each sensor element cooperates with the supporting surface for pressing the running slivers against the supporting surface. An adding device adds the excursions of the sensor elements, and a transducer converts the excursion values into electric pulses.

An apparatus for severing fiber bale ties and removing cut ties from a fiber bale includes a tie cutter for severing a metal tie surrounding the bale at a bale location; and a first metal sensor for responding to a presence of a metal tie around the bale. The first metal sensor is situated ahead of the tie cutter, whereby the first metal sensor passes by the bale tie prior to being severed by the tie cutter. There is further provided a second metal sensor for responding to a presence of a metal tie in engagement with the bale. The second metal sensor is situated after the tie cutter, whereby the second metal sensor trails the tie cutter relative to the fiber bale. The apparatus further has a device for displacing the bale and the first and second metal sensors relative to one another.

An apparatus for severing a fiber bale tie surrounding a fiber bale includes a bale advancing device for moving the fiber bale in an advancing direction along a travel path; a tie cutter for severing the tie; a bale position determining device for emitting a signal when the bale has reached a predetermined location along the travel path; and a device for moving the tie cutter transversely to the conveying direction from a remote position spaced from the bale into engagement with a bale surface when the bale has reached the predetermined location to effect severance of the tie as relative movement between the bale and said tie cutter takes place.

One of the elements is mounted on the detaching device (or other co-travelling component) and the other element is mounted along one of the first and second paths of travel for generating signals as a function of displacement of the detaching device along at least one of the first and second paths of travel.

An apparatus for placing fiber bales in readiness for removing fiber tufts therefrom by a travelling bale opener having an operational range, includes a first arrangement for supporting thereon a plurality of consecutively positioned fiber bales forming a standby bale series having a leading end and a trailing end; and a second arrangement for supporting thereon a plurality of consecutively positioned fiber bales forming an operational bale series to be worked on by the bale opener. The trailing end of the standby bale series is at a greater distance from the second arrangement than the leading end. The second arrangement receives fiber bales from the first arrangement for replenishing the fiber bales of the operational bale series with fiber bales of the standby bale series. The apparatus further includes a bale transporting carriage for conveying a fiber bale to the trailing end of the standby bale series and for depositing the fiber bale, conveyed by the carriage, onto the first arrangement at the trailing end to replenish the standby bale series.

Method and apparatus for placing fiber bales in readiness for fiber tuft

An apparatus for placing fiber bales into readiness for removing fiber tufts therefrom by a travelling bale opener has a fiber bale depositing device for positioning an initial fiber bale at an inclined orientation to the vertical and for positioning, adjacent the initial fiber bale, an additional fiber bale at an angle of inclination greater than the angle of inclination of the initial bale as viewed codirectionally with the angle of the initial bale; a bale-supporting device for engaging and stabilizing the initial fiber bale; a displacing device for moving the bale-supporting device into and out of engagement with the initial fiber bale; and a control device for automatically operating the fiber bale depositing device and the displacing device for automatically and sequentially depositing the initial fiber bale, moving the bale-supporting device into engagement with the initial fiber bale, depositing the additional fiber bale into a countersupporting engagement with the initial fiber bale and moving the bale-supporting device out of engagement with the initial fiber bale.

A bale opener for detaching fiber tufts from a top surface of a fiber bales series includes a tower for travel along a series of fiber bales in a direction of travel; a detaching device supported by the tower and including a rapidly rotating detaching roll; an arrangement for vertically moving the detaching device relative to the tower; an arrangement for angularly moving the detaching device about a horizontal axis oriented perpendicularly to the direction of travel; and a bale transporting device for advancing the fiber bales in a horizontal feed direction. The bale transporting device includes a conveyor belt and first and second end rollers supporting the conveyor belt. The first end roller is situated downstream of the second end roller as viewed in the horizontal feed direction. There is further provided a control arrangement for operating the conveyor belt to advance the fiber bale series in the horizontal feed direction and for simultaneously positioning the detaching device immediately above the downstream end roller upon completion of a working pass of the bale opener in a direction coinciding with the horizontal feed direction.
