In order to provide good sealing for an ink fountain insert installed in a wedge-shaped ink fountain, the base of the insert is lengthened at its lower end by a resilient strip by which the insert can be arranged on the ink blade, and the side walls of the insert support a resilient wedge in the deflecting area of the strip.

To compensate for oscillations and bending of a blanket cylinder, and particularly oscillatory behavior under specific operating speeds, underlays between the rubber blanket and the cylinder surface are provided which are of differential thickness, so that, at any given operating speed where the blanket cylinder tends to move away from an associated impression cylinder, the underlay is thickened to thereby maintain essentially uniform printing pressure against the printing substrate (5) under all conditions. The system is equally applicable for plate cylinder - blanket cylinder systems of uniform diameter, as well as for plate cylinder - blanket cylinders of different diameter, and, in the latter case, preferably utilize an underlay blanket which tapers uniformly from a thinner portion to a thicker portion beneath the printed subject matter transferred to the blanket cylinder upon the second revolution of the plate cylinder.

To permit formation of a threading element as a closed-loop structure, while being capable of accommodating threading paths of different lengths, the threading element is formed as a sprocket chain which has a long return portion (1) in a return path, coupled to a driven sprocket wheel (2), and connecting portions (3, 4) of a length suitable for the respective threading paths (B, C), and selectively connectable with the return portion (1), to thereby form a closed loop with the selected connecting portion (3 or 4). Pneumatically operated pistons located on path selection switches (5, 6) push the last link of the return portion into engagement with a selected end of the connecting portion, for example by engaging a cross pin (26) in a slotted end link (22, 23; 24, 25) of the connecting portions. The system is entirely automatically controllable, and additional pneumatically operated pistons (7, 10; 8, 11; 9, 12) engage between the links of the link pairs of the respective return and connecting portions of the sprocket chain to hold the respective portions in position during switch-over of the terminal link and, after switch-over, to retain in position that one of the connecting portions which is not connected, for future use.

To provide for automatic threading of a paper web throughout an entire printing press equipped with a press threading mechanism, and also over the folding former thereof, two paper guide baffles are located at the back side of the folding former extending in converging direction from the edges of the former to the tip thereof and up to the nip between a pair of take-up rollers located below, and adjacent the tip of the former. Air pressure differential generating means, typically air blast nozzles are directed towards the guide baffles to generate an under pressure adjacent to surfaces thereof which will pull paper downwardly into the nip between the take-up rollers. The take-up rollers themselves have a knurled, or ribbed surface and are driven by air blasts directed against the ribbing of the surface, to move paper which is guided over the folding former by the air blasts away and through the former mechanism. Thus, threading of the press can be done entirely automatically, eliminating the requirement of a pressman, threading the paper web over the former.

A plurality of drive elements, such as electric motors supplied with sprockets, are located along a threading path for the paper web of a rotary printing press; a threading element, such as a sprocket chain of a finite length somewhat longer than the maximum space between drive elements is moved along the path, for example, in a guide channel, the threading element cooperating with switches located adjacent the drive elements to energize the drive element adjacent a leading edge of the threading element, and move the threading element along to the next threading element, the trailing end turning the switch OFF since drive power will be supplied by the next drive element along the path. This sprocket chain carries a gripper with which the leading edge of the paper web to be threaded into the printing press can be gripped. The channels guiding the sprocket chain preferably are flexible, for example, plastic, and may be formed with switches so as to short-circuit certain guides of the drive elements, either in the forward threading, or in a return idling path.
