A container for X-ray films is of the type wherein at least one side of the film is contacted by a stratum of fluorescent material. The fluorescent material is biased against the respective side or sides of the film by two layers which consist of ferromagnetic and/or magnetic material, flank the film and attract each other. Such layers can be applied to the inner or outer sides of sheet-like carriers consisting of synthetic plastic material. The aforedescribed film, stratum or strata, layers and carriers may but need not be inserted into the space between the rigid or flexible walls of an envelope. The envelope can be dispensed with if the carriers consist of opaque material. Since each of the two carriers can support the respective layer and the respective stratum of fluorescent material, the thickness of the entire package is minimal and the film can be placed into close proximity of one or more objects to be imaged so as to obtain sharp images of such object or objects. The distance between the film and the object or objects is reduced still further if the layers of ferromagnetic and/or magnetic material are applied to the inner sides of the respective carriers because the distance between the layers is then small and the thickness of such layers can be held to a minimum. The thinnest packages are obtained by mixing the ingredients of the layers with the ingredients of the fluorescent strata and applying to each carrier a single coat of the resulting suspension so that the coat is disposed between the respective carrier and the corresponding side of the film.

The data processing device for reading and processing visually observable information taking place on a data carrier includes a hand operated reading unit guidable in a first direction along a line of the text on the data carrier; scanning unit in the form of a column of photoelectric elements is arranged in the reading unit in a direction perpendicular to the direction of movement of the reading unit; and timing means provided in the reading unit for controlling the scanning rate of respective elements in response to the speed of movement of the reading unit.

Data processing device for reading and processing visually observable

Information on a patient chart is imaged onto a first portion of a dielectric receptor sheet simultaneously with, prior to or subsequent to exposure of a second portion of the receptor sheet to object-modulated X-rays in an ionography imaging chamber. The sheet has an outer layer consisting of polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene terephthalate and is brought into intimate contact with a chart at a station where the chart and the overlapping first portion of the sheet are exposed to electromagnetic radiation issuing from an electronic flash unit. This results in the formation of a latent image of the information on the first sheet portion, and such image is thereupon converted into a visible image, either on the receptor sheet or on a separate sheet, in accordance with a xerographic developing technique by resorting to toner particles. The sheet can be reused by neutralizing its charge, e.g., by heating its layer to a temperature approximately 10.degree. C. above the freezing point of the material of the layer, by moving the sheet relative to an AC corona discharge device (or vice versa), or by washing the layer with alcohol.

Electrophotographic method and apparatus

Apparatus for developing latent images of X-rayed objects on dielectric receptor sheets has a carrier which advances receptor sheets along a circular path about a horizontal axis. A tank with an open top is installed below the six o'clock position of the carrier and contains a horizontal developing electrode having narrow elongated channels extending in parallelism with the axis of the carrier. A pump draws liquid developer from a vessel in which the tank is confined and admits the developer into the bottom zone of the tank wherein the developer rises to fill and flow above the channels of the electrode and to thereby contact the latent image of a sheet on the moving carrier. The surplus of liquid developer overflows the upper edge of the tank and returns into the vessel. The electrode is movable up and down by rotary eccentrics to thereby influence the development of latent images, especially the development of outlines of dark portions of the images.

Apparatus for developing latent images of X-rayed objects

Relative movement is effected between the original and the projection system of the copying machine, and the latter projects images of successive transverse strip-shaped sections of the original onto the recording medium. The projection system comprises a plurality of lens-row systems. Each lens-row system includes a first lens row which receives light from a strip-shaped section of the original and projects into an intermediate image plane, and a second lens row which receives light from the intermediate image plane and projects that light onto the recording medium. The lens-row systems are spaced apart in a direction transverse to the direction of elongation of the individual lens rows. The light passing through each lens-row system includes a plurality of central rays, each passing through the optical center of one lens element of the first lens row and through the optical center of the corresponding lens element of the second lens row. Optical deflecting structure is utilized to cause the central rays of the plural lens-row systems to converge both in the vicinity of the original and in the vicinity of the recording medium. Thus, when the plural lens-row systems image onto the recording medium a particular strip-shaped section of the original, this section is being imaged onto the recording medium by all lens-row systems simultaneously, not successively.

Exposure system for copying machines

An ionography imaging chamber wherein the front side face of the pressure vessel is immediately adjacent to the foremost portion of the interelectrode gap and the image-receiving part of a dielectric receptor sheet in the gap extends into immediate proximity of the front side face. The front part of the margin of the sheet is bent over the front edge portion of one of the electrodes, and the gasket which seals the interelectrode gap while the latter is filled with compressed high Z gas abuts against the folded-over front part of the sheet. The sheet is attached to a drawer which carries one of the electrodes and is insertable into a compartment of the main section of the pressure vessel. One or more auxiliary electrodes are installed in the foremost portion of the gap to prevent distortion of latent images in the region which is nearest to the front side face of the pressure vessel.

Method and apparatus for making latent images of object-modulated X-rays

In an electrophotographic copier a fusing station is provided at which a toner image previously formed on a copy carrier is fixed on the carrier by fusing. The fusing station includes a flash tube which, when discharged, produces the heat required for the fusing operation. The electrical energy required by the flash tube is supplied from a flash capacitor. To avoid current spikes during charging of the flash capacitor the same receives its current from a drive system which includes a motor-driven generator in circuit with the flash tube; the inertia of the drive system acts as a buffer between the flash capacitor and the current supply source and prevents the occurrence of current peaks during the charging of the capacitor.

Electrophotographic copier

An image is formed on a recording medium by illuminating a multitude of points on the surface of the recording medium to form lines of image points. Relative movement is effected between the recording medium and a plurality of light-emitting diodes. The light-emitting diodes are arranged in a plurality of rows. Each row extends parallel to the direction in which a line of image points to be formed upon the recording medium extends. The rows are arranged successively in the direction of relative movement. A plurality of projector lenses is operative for projecting reduced-scale images of the light emitted by the light-emitting elements of the plurality of rows onto a portion of the recording medium on which a single line of image points is to be formed. The projector lenses are arranged in a plurality of lens rows, each of which extends parallel to the direction of the line of image points to be formed. The lenses of each row project the light emitted by the elements of only a single respective one of the rows of light-emitting elements. Successive lenses within each lens row project onto the recording-medium line images of the light emitted by successive respective groups of the light-emitting elements of the associated row of light-emitting elements.

A process of forming on a copying material from an original having respective minimum and maximum density values D.sub.min and D.sub.max a copy having respective minimum and maximum density values P and Q, different from D.sub.min and D.sub.max, comprising the steps of: forming first and second non-superimposed test wedge images by exposing first and second specimens of the copying material to light of respective first and second colors, the exposure of the first and second specimens being such that the respective average exposure times are T.sub.B and T.sub.G, with the exposure to light varying across each specimen according to a preselected relationship, determining from the first test wedge image the density values D.sub.1 and D.sub.3 which an original must have to produce upon the copying material the respective density values P and Q if the copying of such original onto the copying material is performed with light of the first color for an exposure time T.sub.B, determining from the second test wedge image the density values D.sub.2 and D.sub.4 which an original must have to produce upon the copying material the respective density values P and Q if the copying of such original onto the copying material is performed with light of the second color for an exposure time T.sub.G, determining from the values mentioned above the values t.sub.b and t.sub.g by solving at least one equation expressing the relationship between t.sub.b and t.sub.g and the values mentioned above, t.sub.b and t.sub.g being the respective exposure time intervals which must be employed for light of the first and second colors to form on the copying material from an original having the respective minimum and maximum density values D.sub.min and D.sub.max a copy having the respective minimum and maximum density values P and Q, and then forming such copy from such original.

Method of determining exposure times for photographic copying material

A web with overlays for use in the document presentation device of a photographic copying machine has several sheet-like sections with overlapping portions which are separably coupled to each other by snap fasteners and carry overlays which are welded thereto by the application of heat and pressure. The overlays are applied to those sides of the sections which are coated with layers of photographic emulsion.

An image consisting of a multitude of image points is formed by effecting relative transport between a plurality of light-emitting diodes and a recording medium. The diodes are arranged in rows. The rows are arranged successively in the transport direction. The rows extend at an angle relative to the transport direction. The diodes of each single row are offset relative to those of the other row, in direction transverse to the transport direction, by an amount equal to the distance between adjoining diodes in a single row divided by the number of rows, and/or multiples of that amount. Each diode is provided with an optical unit which projects onto the recording medium a reduced image of the light emitted by the diode. The diode-control signals corresponding to a single line of image points of the image to be formed are applied to the individual diodes with different respective time delays dependent upon the rate of transport and corresponding to the different distances among the rows as measured in the transport direction.

Recorder

Relative movement is effected between a recording medium and a row of light-emitting diodes (LED's). The row of LED's extends parallel to the direction in which the line of image points to be formed extends, and transverse to the direction of relative movement. Reduced-scale images of the LED's are projected onto the line on the recording medium on which the line of image points is to be formed. The LED's and/or the optical units forming the reduced-scale images are oscillated in a direction parallel to the direction in which the line of image points to be formed extends. Each image of an LED sweeps a straight linear region on the recording-medium line at least equal in length to the distance between adjoining LED's of the LED-row. During each n.sup.th half-period of oscillation, a succession of control signals is applied to each LED, determining a succession of adjoining image points which the respective LED forms upon the recording-medium line in question; n is an integer. The resultant line of image points contains a number of image points equal to an integral multiple of the number of LED's in the row of LED's.

A sheet-holding cassette for a copying machine is formed as a box containing a stack of copy sheets. This box is adapted to be held in the machine with the uppermost sheet of the stack engageable with the paper-advance roller of the machine. A slot is provided in the upper wall of this cassette as well as a guide next to this slot and a deflector in back of this slot so that an extra sheet can be slid along the upper wall of the machine and into the cassette to lie at least at its front edge on top of the stack of sheets in the cassette. Thus as the paper-advance roller is reciprocated down onto the stack it will pick up this extra sheet rather than the top sheet of the stack, allowing a copy to be made on a single extra copy sheet without having to reload the machine.

A cartridge is disclosed in which a hub is rotatable in a housing and has its periphery partly embraced by an endless band that is mounted for travel in the housing. The band is trained about a plurality of guide rollers at least one of which is located outwardly adjacent the hub and is mounted so that it can move towards and away from the hub. Movement away from the hub is opposed by a permanently acting biasing force.

Cartridge for strip-shaped record carriers

Sheet-like dielectric receptors which are to be exposed to object-modulated X-rays in the interelectrode gap of an ionography imaging chamber are attached to sheet-like carriers so that the carriers extend laterally beyond the reactors. The carriers are thereupon transported through the interelectrode gap and through successive stations of a xerographic printer which renders the latent imges of objects visible and subjects the receptors to other treatment. The carriers can be attached to receptors by resorting to an adhesive, by the application of electrostatic charges and/or by causing the marginal portions of the carriers to engage the receptors by suction. The carriers are provided with semiconductive layers whose surface resistance can be varied at or prior to entry of carriers and attached receptors into the various stations; this can be achieved by utilizing semiconductive layers whose resistance can be influenced by changing the pressure of the surrounding atmosphere or by utilizing photosensitive layers whose resistance changes in response to exposure to light. The layers are regenerated upon separation of finished receptors so as to allow for renewed use of the respective carriers.
