In a rotary-piston displacement machine, to seal the flat sealing planes between the end faces of the displacement body (5), executing a circular motion, and the side faces (20) of the stationary housing (7) which run parallel thereto, the end faces of the displacement body (5) are provided with a groove (13) in which an elastic sealing strip (14) made of slideable material is inserted. In a free-running pressure wave supercharger driven by the gas forces, nozzles (27) are provided in the gas casing (6) and possibly also in the air casing (5), which nozzles are connected--via a drive line (26)--with a position in the air casing (5), preferably with the high-pressure air port (2), at which position a surplus pressure relative to the nozzle entry occurs during the run-up phase of the pressure wave supercharger. A control device 15 actuates a supercharge air flat (14) in the port (2) and a valve device (23+25) in the drive line (26) in the opposite sense, i.e. if the supercharge air flap (14) holds the port (2) closed, the valve device (23+25) frees the flow through the drive line (26) to the nozzle (27) and vice versa. The diaphragm capsule (17) of the control device (15) is subjected, on one side, to the pressure in a compression pocket (11) via a control pressure line (19) and, on the other side, to the pressure before the supercharge air flap (14) in the port (2). During the run-up phase, the pressure in the compression pocket (11) exceeds the pressure in front of the supercharge air flap (14) and the nozzle (27) receives drive air. As soon as the pressure in front of the supercharge air flap (14) exceeds the pressure in the compression pocket (11), the supercharge air flap (14) opens and simultaneously closes the valve device (23+25). The nozzle (27) is switched off and the further drive is then mainly provided by the high-pressure exhaust-gas jet from the port (3) entering obliquely to the direction of the rotor peripheral velocity.

In the high pressure exhaust gas duct of a pressure wave supercharger, a rotary valve is supported in the region where the gas pocket supply branches off from the high pressure exhaust gas duct, the angular position of the rotary valve being controlled either in steps or steplessly by one or more parameters typical of the pressure wave process and, if necessary, of the engine working process or the engine operating condition. Depending on the operating condition, the rotary valve closes the high pressure exhaust gas duct and the gas pocket supply duct completely or partially. A gas-dynamic pressure-wave machine comprises essentially a celled rotor operating within a stationary casing that includes a cylindrical middle portion co-extensive in length with the rotor and two side casing portions located respectively adjacent opposite ends of the rotor for entrance and discharge of a hot high-pressure gas and a cold gas respectively which flow through the cells, some of the energy in the hot high-pressure gas being imparted to the cold gas so as to cause the latter to be compressed as a result of the pressure-wave process which takes place within the cells. The rotor becomes heated by the hot gas to an operating temperature between those of the cold gas, to be compressed, e.g. air and the hot gas, e.g. engine exhaust gas causing it to expand in an axial direction. In order to prevent any rubbing action between the surfaces of the two side casing portions and the opposite ends of the rotor and yet maintain a desirable small operating axial clearance therebetween, the middle portion of the casing, for each duty point of the machine, is heated approximately simultaneously with the rotor to a temperature which is at least approximately proportional to the average rotor temperature at that duty point. The required heating of the middle portion of the casing is accomplished by passing some of the hot gas through a channel formed between the periphery of the rotor and the adjacent inner surface of the middle casing portion and/or through a channel formed between the outer surface of the middle casing portion and a jacket surrounding the latter.
