A secondary sealing element comprises a base body () made of a synthetic material and comprising a base portion () and a seal portion () which each comprise coaxially aligned, axially adjacent through bores () for the passage of a component, and an annular disc element () accommodated in the base portion and comprising a through bore () coaxially aligned with the through bores in the base and seal portions and being made of a material which differs from that of the base body. In the unloaded state, the through bore () of the annular disc element () has a radial dimension d which is greater than that Dof the through bore () in the seal portion () and smaller than that Din the base portion () of the base body (). The annular disc element consists of a carbon material. An important field of application for the secondary sealing element is that of mechanical face seals for sealing relatively moveable components.

Secondary sealing element

A face seal device for use with components rotating at a high rotational speed includes a non-rotating face seal ring ( ) and a rotary face seal ring ( ). The rotary face seal ring is mounted in a loose fit for common rotation with a rotating component and includes a sealing face ( ) which, in operation, is essentially radially aligned for cooperation with an opposite sealing face ( ) of the non-rotating face seal ring. A heavy-mass-contributing element ( ) is arranged to rotate in common with the rotating component and engages a portion of the rotary face seal ring. The center of gravity of the heavy-mass-contributing element is axially spaced from that of the rotary face seal ring, whereby, in operation, a torque directed towards the non-rotating face seal ring is applied to the rotary face seal ring. This torque arises from the centrifugal forces that correspond to the mass-contributing element and the spacing between the centers of gravity.

Face seal device with additional mass for high rotational speeds

A sealing element for a face seal assembly including a bellows portion having mounting portions at its axial ends. One of the mounting portions is designed for non-rotational mounting on a component, e.g. a shaft, and the other for retaining an annular face member. The sealing element is formed, on at least the faces thereof exposed to a medium to be sealed, from a plastics material selected from a group of plastics materials comprising PEEK and ECTFE. The sealing element serves for applying a bias force to the annular face member. The sealing element enables the design of an uncomplicated, easily maintained, externally pressurised single action face seal assembly which is particularly suitable for sealing aggressive media.

Sealing element for a face seal assembly

A seal arrangement for sealing a shaft with respect to a housing containing a fluid comprises a face seal exposed to a buffer gas on a portion thereof facing away from the fluid. Disposed upstream of the face seal at the fluid said portion thereof is a collecting chamber for receiving a leakage of the buffer gas having gained access to the fluid-side portion of the face seal. The collecting chamber is in communication with an external separating means for separating the gas phase from the fluid phase of a gas/fluid mixture having collected in the collecting chamber. The fluid phase can be returned into the interior of the housing.
