An image reversal process for the production of electrophotographic color proofs from negative separation films where the photoconductive recording member is reusable and the proofs are produced on printing stock paper and which very closely match the appearance of the printed sheet. The process of the invention comprises, exposing a photoconductor that is charged to a first polarity through a color separation negative film which may be in contact therewith, developing the unexposed areas on the photoconductor with opposite polarity background toner to form background deposits thereon in areas corresponding to the opaque non-image or background areas on the negative, subjecting the photoconductor and the background deposits thereon to corona discharge of said first polarity to charge the photoconductor in the areas free of said background deposits, that is, in areas corresponding to the transparent image areas on the negative, removing charges of said first polarity from the background deposits, developing the image area on the photoconductor with opposite polarity color toner, and transferring the thus formed color toner deposits to a receptor such as printing stock paper. The process can be repeated for each additional color separation negative film to transfer the additional specific color developed image in proper registry where a proper toner for the specific color image will be used.

Electrostatic proofing of negative color separations

A method of producing positive multicolor proofs electrostetically including the steps of charging a photoconductor, exposing the charged photoconductor to a negative film, forming a latent electrostatic image on the photoconductor, transfer toning said latent image by virtual contact with a donor member carrying an electrostaticially deposited toner layer. The image remaining on the donor member is transferred to the printing stock paper forming the positive proof. Multiple images are formed from successive film negatives and transferred successively on the printing stock. The deposited form layer is split, between the charged areas on the photoconductor and the image areas on the donor member.

A toning method and member for electrostatography wherein a recording member containing information on its image bearing surface in the form of electrostatic latent images of one polarity is toned by attracting to such latent images toner material of opposite polarity including providing a carrier or toning member according to the invention containing on at least one surface thereof a dry pre-toner coating; activating such pre-toner coating with an insulative solvent to thereby solvate and confer opposite polarity to such pre-toner coating contained thereon while rendering such pre-toner coating releasable from the carrier member; establishing virtual contact between the activated and releasable pre-toner coating on the carrier member and the image bearing surface of the recording member; transferring the pre-toner coating in image configuration onto the recording member by attraction to the latent images to form toner deposits thereon; and separating the carrier member from the recording member.

Toning method and member for electrostatography

An electrophotographic method of producing positive color proof copies from negative films wherein a charged photoconductor is exposed to the negative film and toned with a conductive toner forming image deposits in the unexposed area. The conductive deposits are transferred to a dielectric paper and affixed thereto. The dielectric paper is charged, the charge being accepted only in areas free of the conductive deposits, i.e. the final image areas. The charged areas are toned with color toners and the color toner deposit transferred to printing stock to provide the positive proof.

A method of developing a latent electrostatic charge image formed on a photoconductor surface comprising the steps of applying a thin viscous layer of electrically charged toner particles to an applicator roller preferably by electrically assisted separation thereof from a liquid toner suspension, defining a restricted passage between the applicator roller and the photoconductor surface which approximates the thickness of the viscous layer, transferring the toner particles from the applicator roller to the photoconductor surface due to the preferential adherence thereof to the photoconductor surface under the dominant influence of the electric field strength of the electrostatic latent image carried by said photoconductive surface, the quantity of toner particles transferred being proportional to the relative incremental field strength of the latent electrostatic image. Apparatus is provided for carrying out the method of the invention which includes an applicator roller mounted for rotation in a container for toner suspension, an electrode arranged adjacent the circumferential surface of said roller to define an electrodeposition chamber therebetween and electrical connections between the said roller, electrode and a voltage source to enable electrolytic separation of toner particles in the chamber forming a thin highly viscous layer of concentrated toner particles on the roller, the roller arranged to define a virtual 'zero' gap with the photoconductive surface carrying the latent electrostatic image, the virtual 'zero' gap approximating the thickness of the electrodeposited toner layer.
