In a medical pulse oximetry sensor () at least two light emitting diodes () are disposed to emit red light and infrared light through a portion of a subject's anatomy with a typically high oxygenated blood throughput. Typically, this area is also relatively narrow, to allow the light to pass through the area with acceptable attenuation, such as a finger or an earlobe. Light emitted from the LEDs () is incumbent upon an integrated circuit () printed from a single CMOS substrate (). The integrated circuit () includes all preprocessing and post-processing elements needed to convert the detected light signals into a pulse oximetry measurement. These elements include a photodetector (), a photo pre-amplifier (), a sampler/holder (), an analog to digital converter (), a microprocessor () a rangefinder (), a timing control circuit () and an LED control circuit (). By integrating all pre and post processing functions into the carriage housing (), the system becomes more efficient, less expensive to manufacture, and more robust to ambient light and x-ray radiation.

Integrated pulse oximetry sensor

A system for monitoring a physiological condition of an individual. The system () comprises sensing means () arranged to pick up a first signal (M) in a first mode of the system, said first signal being representative of the physiological condition and to forward the first signal to a signal processing unit (). The system comprises an actuatable control unit () positioned remote from the signal processing unit, the control unit () being suitable to generate a second signal (T) arranged to be superimposed on the first signal (M). The signal processing unit () is arranged to decode the second signal and to make the system enter into a second mode upon receipt of the second signal (T).

The distribution of the scattered radiation is determined by detector cells ( &prime;) which, because of the measuring method carried out, are shielded from direct irradiation in a two-dimensional, multi-cell detector field ( ). This distribution is used to perform a scatter correction in the neighboring, directly irradiated detector cells ( ). Furthermore, scatter correction can be performed by computer simulation of the scatter processes. The X-ray detector also includes an evaluation unit which is electrically connected to the conversion element in order to receive and evaluate the electric charge pulses. In order to form an X-ray detector which exhibits a high degree of linearity over a large dynamic range in conjunction with a higher maximum count rate and in order to avoid falsification of the calculated image by multiple counting of X-ray quanta, the evaluation unit includes a current/frequency converter as well as an electronic counter which is electrically connected thereto.
