A lateral register system, in particular for flexible printing forms which are held by their edges in an axially extending gap in a plate cylinder, the edges being pre-bent according to the inclination of the gaps. The register system includes an insert strip for each printing form, which insert strip can be inserted into the gap and has at least one stationary register pin. When a plurality of printing forms are to be held in a common gap, the insert strips have different lengths and can be placed one on top of the other so that each printing form can cooperate with the register pin provided for it. Each insert strip can be adjusted individually in the axial direction of the plate cylinder by an adjusting system.

To facilitate expansion of modular printing units (1, 2, 3) and particularly vertical expansion into tower printing stations (1-4; 2-5; 3-6), each printing unit, with its own printing cylinder (20)and drive motor (8-13), has associated therewith a power take-off unit (14-19; 53-56) which, via a right-angle drive, synchronizes a horizontal synchronizing shaft (21) with individual vertical synchronizing shafts (22, 23, 24) of two-tier or two-level or tower printing stations. The power take-off units include continously engaged gears, including bevel gears (79, 80, 81) coupling together the synchronizing shafts and, additionally, coupling a clutch part (76, 78) of the power take-off unit, so that, upon engagement with a second clutch part (77, 75), the synchronizing shaft, individual drive motors (8-13) and the printing cylinder can be coupled together or, upon disengagement of the clutch parts, the motor can drive the individual printing cylinder, independently of synchronized continuous rotation of the horizontal and vertical synchronizing shafts (21, 22-24).

To permit web portions (16, 17; 18, 19; 20, 21) slit from longitudinal webs (2a, 2b, 2c) to be selectively interleaved or interlaced, with or without turning over, pairs of turning bars or rods (6, 7; 8, 9; 10, 11; 12, 13) are located in essentially vertically aligned position; laterally of the turning rods, two deflection rollers (22, 23) are positioned which can be individually movably shifted by individual drive motors (32) operating a gear on a rack formed on guide rails, so that the deflection rollers can be selectively positioned at the level of a selected pair of turning rods. This permits placement of a web portion, right side up or turned over, between a pair of web portions which is not necessarily the next adjacent one in the vertical sequence of superimposed webs arriving at the interlacing or interleaving system.

To selectively place web portions slit from a printed paper web with a left web portion above a right one over a right web portion above the left one, the parallel-arriving web portions are so guided through a turning bar looping of the right or left web about the turning bars, with superposition, which involves a 90.degree. position change of the turning bars, and while maintaining the air cushion between the paper web and the turning bars, the level of the arriving web with respect to the first-encountered or passed over or looped about turning bar is controlled or so set that the web will engage the turning bar tangentially with the plane of the arriving web portion and delivery web portion parallel to each other, by, respectively, guiding the web portion either above the turning bar pair or from below the turning bar pair, upon 90.degree. shift of the turning bar pair. The respective height guidance can be done by either first guiding the arriving web portion in the appropriate direction or by positioning the level of the turning bars of the turning bar pair to meet the arriving web portion in accordance with the desired looping direction of the arriving web portion about the pair of turning bars.

To permit both circumferential as well as axial register adjustment of three printing couples (1, 2, 3), in which the respective cylinders of the printing couples are interconnected by spiral gears, two of the blanket cylinders (4, 8) are axially shiftable. The changes in circumferential register, upon changing of lateral register--due to the spiral gears--are compensated by position motor controllers (34, 44) which may include a microprocessor (50), automatically. Lateral register is set in a predetermined sequence by the respective cylinders, in accordance with the coupling of one of the plate cylinders (e.g. 5) with a printing machine main drive pinion (68).

To provide a compact drive arrangement for a plurality of axially oscillating or reciprocating milling rollers (11, 12, 13) used in inkers and/or dampers of rotary printing machines, a central gear (16) is provided, driven from the plate cylinder (5) of the printing system, and wide enough to permit axial excursion of meshing gears (11', 12', 13') coupled to the respective milling rollers, and engaged with the central gear. To provide for axial excursion, the shaft (20) on which the central gear is located is connected with a right-angle drive to a transverse shaft (20) which is coupled to eccenters (35, 36, 37) which, in turn, are coupled by connecting rods (41, 42, 43) to a slider coupling (25, 26, 27; 28, 29, 30; 46, 47, 48) with the connecting rods, to thereby change rotary movement of the transverse shaft, driven in synchronism with the plate cylinder to longitudinal movement, while permitting adjustment of the phasing of the respective longitudinal drives by placing the relative position of the eccenters on the transverse shaft such that no oscillating or reciprocating roller will reach terminal dead center (TDC) position simultaneously with another milling roller, for example, for three rollers, by offsetting the eccenters 120.degree. with respect to each other.

To permit easy cleaning of an ink trough, for example upon change of color or type of ink for an offset printing machine, the ink trough is formed with a cross rail to which the doctor blade engaging the ink duct roller from below is attached. The structure includes a pivotable holding rail positioned below and beneath the doctor blade, and means to hold the holding rail in position against the cross rail, the ink zone adjustment screws passing through and being retained by the holding rail. Upon loosening of the attachment means, the holding rail and with it the adjustment screws and possibly an override cross strip and its adjustment screws are pivoted away from the doctor blade, which will become unstressed, thus leaving a gap between the end of the doctor blade and the duct roller, preferably not less than 1 cm wide, to permit ink to drain out of the trough, for example into a receiving vessel.

To provide a smoothly conically converging edge portion of a former, with air communication openings therethrough, the former sheet is bent over at the edge in the conically converging shape with the inner bent-over portion left free; core elements of conical shape matching the cone shape of the bent-over portion are introduced into the open space, and a curable resin such as epoxy, polyurethane or silicone is poured over the core, to adhere to the bent-over portion and the major wall portion of the former and, after dissolving of the core element, leaving air chambers to which air with differential atmospheric pressure can be introduced through connecting stubs which can be cast into the closing-off wall. Solvent, such as tetrachlorethylene to dissolve a polystyrene core can likewise be introduced through these stubs. If a plurality of core units are used, a plurality of separate air communication chambers can be formed with separating walls cast in the gaps or spaces between core elements.
