A system for transmitting electric power into a bore hole, the system having an electric transmission line extending through the bore hole between an electric power source and a receiving station, wherein the receiving station includes frequency increasing means for increasing the frequency of the electric current supplied through the electric transmission line, voltage converter means for changing the voltage of the electric current supplied to it via the frequency increasing means, connecting means for supplying the frequency-increased electric current to the voltage converter means, and means for connecting an electric load to the receiving station.

Transmitting electric power into a bore hole

A steerable soil penetration system having a steerable penetration head, which compacts and does not cut away the surrounding soil and which is connected to an elongate flexible tubing such that the orientation of the penetration head can be varied relative to the tubing. The elongate tubing and/or a downhole hammer or tractor pushes the penetration head through the subsurface formation. Preferably the tubing is surrounded by a narrow annulus so that buckling of the tubing is inhibited and the tubing protects the pierced hole against caving in. Optionally the tubing is circumferentially expanded after completion of the piercing process thereby increasing the width of the pierced hole and providing a permanent hole lining.

Steerable soil penetration system

A system is provided for detecting the presence of formation gas in a stream of drilling fluid flowing through a wellbore during drilling of the wellbore. The system has at least one sensor chamber connectable to a drill string for drilling the wellbore, each sensor chamber containing a volume of a selected gas and having a membrane wall which allows passage of formation gas from the stream of drilling fluid into the sensor chamber. The sensor is arranged to detect a change of a selected characteristic of the volume of gas due to passage of formation gas from the stream of drilling fluid via the membrane wall into the sensor chamber.

System for detecting gas in a wellbore during drilling

A method of creating a wellbore in an earth formation, the wellbore including a first wellbore section and a second wellbore section penetrating a hydrocarbon fluid bearing zone of the earth formation, is provided. The method comprises drilling the first wellbore section, arranging a remotely controlled drilling device at a selected location in the first wellbore section, from which selected location the second wellbore section is to be drilled, and arranging a hydrocarbon fluid production conduit in the first wellbore section in sealing relationship with the wellbore wall, the conduit being provided with fluid flow control means and a fluid inlet in fluid communication with said selected location. The drilling device is operated to drill the second wellbore section whereby during drilling of the drilling device through the hydrocarbon fluid bearing zone, flow of hydrocarbon fluid from the second wellbore section into the production conduit is controlled by the fluid flow control means.

Method of creating a wellbore

A survey device for use in a borehole formed in an earth formation. The device includes a carrier body carrying earth formation survey apparatus and drilling device arranged at the front end of the device for drilling of the borehole, a device for progressing the carrier body through the borehole in correspondence with progress of drilling by the drilling device and a device for removing the rock particles resulting from the drilling process. The device for removing the rock particles comprises a device for transporting the rock particles to the rear end of the device and depositing the rock particles into the borehole behind the rear end of the device.

Earth formation surveying device

A method for fracturing an underground formation surrounding an oil and/or gas well comprises positioning a fracturing tool in a selected orientation in the borehole and expanding the tool such that it exerts a circumferentially varying pressure against the borehole wall over a selected period of time thereby initiating in the surrounding formation one or more fractures which each intersect the borehole wall in a selected orientation and simultaneously injecting a proppant into the fracture(s).
