Using the mounting flange ( ), the bracket ( ) and/or the welding head ( ) can be displaced in a linear guide ( ), said guide being situated opposite the hydraulic cylinder ( ), according to the progression of the weld seam ( ). In addition, stop elements ( &prime;) for detecting the position of the edges of at least one of the pieces of sheet metal ( ) are arranged on the clamping tool ( ) in order to position the pieces of sheet metal ( ) with regard to one another and/or to the welding head ( ).
