Polyvinyl chloride-acrylate copolymers are plasticized with plasticizers to produce a composition having low hardness values. For example, Shore A values of 55 or less can be readily achieved. Such low values are often achieved by utilizing low amounts, for example less than 100 parts by weight, of the plasticizer for every 100 parts by weight of the PVC-acrylate copolymer. Low Shore A hardness values are also aided by the use of high amounts of acrylate units in the copolymer, that is amounts of at least 45 percent by weight based upon the total weight of the copolymer. The copolymer is made from a vinyl constituent which is a vinyl chloride monomer with an optional vinyl component comonomer and one or more acrylate monomers having the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is an aliphatic, an aromatic, or combinations thereof, having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, or a halogen derivative thereof, or hydrogen, and R.sup.2 is an aliphatic, an aromatic, an alkyl hydroxyl, or combinations thereof, having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, or a halogen derivative thereof; or a hydrocarbyl ether such as an alkoxyalkyl, a phenoxyaryl, a phenoxyalkyl, or combinations thereof, having from 2 to 1,000 carbon atoms, or a substituted halogen, oxygen, sulfur, or nitrogen derivative thereof. In another embodiment, the polyvinyl chloride-acrylate copolymers are blended with low temperature property improving polymers which are non-liquid, high molecular weight polymers.

An internally plasticized polyvinyl halide obtained by the polymerization of a vinyl halide monomer in the presence of a polyester polymeric plasticizer substantially derived from glutaric acid and a diol. Articles made therefrom exhibit a unique balance of improved permanence, low plasticizer extraction high clarity and low haze. The polymers are particularly suitable for use in automotive interior parts or containers for blood components or foodstuffs.

In a preferred embodiment, the invention herein relates to blends of a PVC-containing thermoplastic material and an impact modifier which blends have improved abrasion resistance and a reduced adhesion to glass, said impact modifier has Shore A hardness greater than 70 and is used in an amount of greater than 50 weight parts per 100 weight parts of said thermoplastic material.

Thermoplastic elastomer blends containing polyvinyl chloride having improved oil resistance, exceptionally low compression set and softness are made by mixing a polyvinyl chloride-acrylate copolymer with effective amounts of cured acrylate elastomers. The polyvinyl chloride-acrylate copolymer has an inherent viscosity of from about 0.3 to about 4.0 and is made from a vinyl constituent which is a vinyl chloride monomer with an optional vinyl component comonomer and one or more acrylate monomers having the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is an aliphatic, an aromatic, or combinations thereof, having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, or a halogen derivative thereof, or hydrogen, and R.sup.2 is an aliphatic, an aromatic, an alkyl hydroxyl, or combinations thereof, having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, or a halogen derivative thereof; or a hydrocarbyl ether such as an alkoxyalkyl, a phenoxyaryl, a phenoxyalkyl, or combinations thereof, having from 2 to 1,000 carbon atoms, or a substituted halogen, oxygen, sulfur, or nitrogen derivative thereof, and wherein the acrylate elastomer is made from one or more acrylate monomers having the formula ##STR2## wherein R.sup.3 is an aliphatic, an aromatic, or combinations thereof, having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, or a halogen derivative thereof, or hydrogen, and R.sup.4 is an aliphatic, an aromatic, an alkyl hydroxyl, or combinations thereof, having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, or a halogen derivative thereof; or a hydrocarbyl ether such as an alkoxyalkyl, a phenoxyaryl, a phenoxyalkyl, or combinations thereof having from 2 to 1,000 carbon atoms, or a substituted halogen, oxygen, sulfur, or nitrogen derivative thereof.

Thermoplastic elastomer blends of a polyvinyl chloride-acrylate

Flexibilized vinyl halide polymers and copolymers having improved flame retarding and smoke suppressing as well as physical and electrical properties are described. The compositions are characterized by an unusual combination of ingredients comprising a base polymer flexibilized with chlorinated polyethylene, flame and/or smoke suppressants, stabilizers and plasticizers. The compositions exhibit improved flame and smoke suppression and low brittleness temperature over that of conventional fire and smoke suppressed PVC.

An internally plasticized polyvinyl halide composition is prepared by polymerizing a vinyl halide in the presence of a reactive polyester plasticizer having terminal groups copolymerizable therewith. The reactive polyester acts as an internal plasticizer for the polyvinyl halide composition and is not readily extactable therefrom.

Thermoplastic elastomer blends containing polyvinyl chloride having improved oil resistance and low compression set are made by blending a crosslinked nitrile rubber with a polyvinyl chloride-acrylate copolymer. The amount of nitrile rubber can vary over a wide range as from about 1 part to about 400 parts by weight for every 100 parts by weight of the polyvinyl chloride-acrylate copolymer. The polyvinyl chloride-acrylate copolymer has an inherent viscosity of from about 0.3 to about 4.0 and is made from a vinyl chloride monomer with an optional vinyl component comonomer and one or more acrylate monomers having the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is an aliphatic, an aromatic, or combinations thereof, having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, or a halogen derivative thereof, or hydrogen, and R.sup.2 is an aliphatic, an aromatic, an alkyl hydroxyl, or combinations thereof, having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, or a halogen derivative thereof; or a hydrocarbyl ether such as an akloxyalkyl, a phenoxyaryl, a henoxyalkyl, or combinations thereof, having from 2 to 1,000 carbon atoms, or a substituted halogen, oxygen, sulfur, or nitrogen derivative thereof.
