An optical time domain reflectometry system is used to determine a power response from a device under test -DUT-. For providing power information data, an optical transmitter launches a probe signal with a first wavelength into a DUT, an optical receiver determines optical power information of a first return signal returning from the DUT at a second wavelength, wherein the second wavelength is not equal to the first wavelength, and an analyzer analyzes the power information determined by the optical receiver, and generating data to be at least one of: visualized, stored, and further processed.

The present invention relates to an apparatus and to a method of determination of an optical property of a DUT, in particular of an optical fiber, by means of OTDR, comprising the steps of: coupling an initial optical signal into the DUT, detecting a response signal of the DUT, and determining the optical property of the DUT by means of OTDR using at least a second order backscatter part of the response signal.

An optical measuring device for providing a measurement of an optical device under test -DUT- comprises a measuring unit for providing an optical stimulus signal for the DUT and/or receiving a response signal of the DUT, and a visual fault localization unit for visually localizing faults within the DUT or a connection thereto. The measuring unit and the visual fault localization unit are preferably coupled to a signal direction unit, and the signal direction unit is further coupled to a connector representing an interface of the optical measuring device for coupling the DUT thereto.

Visual fault detection for optical measurements

In a reflectometer measurement for measuring&mdash;in response to a stimulus signal&mdash;return signals reflected and/or backscattered in a network to be measured, operation for receiving the return signals is temporarily disabled or at least suppressed during such operation modes, wherein return signals resulting from closer ranges of the network can cause substantial spurious signals to be added to return signals resulting from more distant ranges of the network.

For visualizing faults in an optical fiber connection, imaging signals from the optical fiber connection are received and an image processing of the imaging signals is provided in order to detect faults in the fiber connection. The imaging signals are graphically represented, whereby a visualization of the detected faults is provided by representing such faults in accordance with a predefined coloring scheme.

An optical measuring device for measuring in a fiber optic network, comprises a measuring unit for performing the measurement in the fiber optic network, a processing unit for processing the measuring results from the measuring unit, and a display for visualizing the processed measuring results. The processing unit further receives imaging signals provided by an imaging unit and processes such imaging signals to be displayed by the display.

An optical fiber is provided with a plurality of reflecting events spatially allocated along the optical fiber for localizing possible faults in the optical fiber. Possible faults are localized by emitting a signal into the optical fiber, measuring the reflected signals, and comparing the measured reflected signals with expected signals representing the optical fiber without faults. In case that there are one or more faults in the optical fiber, the measured reflected signals in a distance behind each one of the one or more faults will show at least a different amplitude, or even disappear, with respect to the expected signals. The expected signals can be received or determined, e.g., from a previous measurement, such as an acceptance measurement, or can be calculated or otherwise received from theoretical analysis (e.g. simulation or modeling) and/or from information about the fiber (such as physical properties).
