An ultrathin glass-ceramic article is provided having an article thickness (t) of equal to or less than 0.3 mm and an outer surface followed towards the inside of the article by an outer layer and a central part. The glass-ceramic has a crystal phase and an amorphous phase and the outer layer includes the crystal phase. The article has a gradient structure or a layered structure.

Ultrathin glass ceramic article and method for producing an ultrathin glass ceramic article

A chemically toughenable or toughened glass has, before chemical toughening, a thickness t of at most 1100 μm. The glass comprises the following components: 45-75 mol-% SiO; 10-25 mol-% AlO; >1-11 mol-% LiO; 0-15 mol-% PO; 0-8 mol-% BO; and 0-5 mol-% TiO. The average number of bridging oxygen per polyhedron (BO) calculated as 2*4−2*(c(O)/(c(Si)+c(Al)+c(B)+c(P)+c(Ti))) is higher than 3.55. Upon chemical toughening, the linear dimension variation in the unit of percentage (V) is so low that the overall geometry variation (OGV) calculated as (DoL/t)/Vis higher than 0.8. DoL is the total depth of all ion-exchange layers on one side of the glass and DoL is more than 1 μm, when the glass is chemically toughened with NaNOonly, KNOonly or with both KNOand NaNO.

Lithium containing aluminosilicate glass with low expansion after chemical toughening

An ultrathin glass article has a thickness of less than or equal to 0.5 mm. The glass has a low TTV and a large threshold diffusivity. The glass has a working point Tof more than 1100&#xb0; C. and a linear thermal expansion coefficient CTE of more than 6*10-6/&#xb0; C. in the temperature range between 25&#xb0; C. and 300&#xb0; C. A method for producing the article as well as the use of the article is also provided. The glass article can be chemically strengthened and forms surface compressive stress layers on surfaces and center tension layer in the center. The toughened ultrathin glass sheet is more flexible and has extraordinary thermal shock resistance which makes it easier to handle for processing.

High strength ultrathin glass and method of making the same

The present invention is directed to a kind of machinable glass ceramic which can be chemically toughened. The machinable and chemically toughenable glass ceramic, which comprises, as represented by weight percentage based on the following compositions, 25-75 wt % of SiO, 6-30 wt % of AlO, 0.1-30 wt % of NaO, 0-15 wt % of KO, 0-30 wt % of BO, 4-35 wt % of MgO, 0-4 wt % of CaO, 1-20 wt % of F, 0-10 wt % of ZrO, 0.1-10 wt % of PO, 0-1 wt % of CeOand 0-1 wt % of SnO, wherein PO+NaO&#x3e;3 wt %, and AlO+NaO+PO&#x3e;17 wt %. Mica crystalline phase can be formed in the glass ceramic and the glass ceramic can be chemically toughened by one step, two steps or multiple steps with depth of K-ion layer of at least 15 &#x3bc;m and surface compress stress of at least 300 MPa. The profile on depth of the ion exchange layer follows the complementary error function. Hardness can be improved by at least 20% after chemical toughening. The dimension deviation ratio is less than 0.06% by ion-exchanging.

Machinable and chemically toughenable fluorine glass-ceramic

A chemically toughened ultrathin glass is provided. The glass has a thickness less than 500 &#x3bc;m and a surface compressive layer having a depth of at most 30 &#x3bc;m. The toughened ultrathin glass sheet is more flexible and has extraordinary thermal shock resistance with the glass being easier to handle for processing.

Described are the use of glass compositions, for example, in the form of glass powders, glass ceramics, fibers, granules, and spheres for achieving an antioxidative effect. The glass compositions may be used in a versatile manner, such as in cosmetic products, medical products, edibles, paints and lacquers, plasters, cements and concrete, in antifouling products and in polymers. Because of the high photo and temperature stability, the glass antioxidants of the present invention are superior to the organic substances known so far. In addition the glass compositions in contact with human being are non-irritant to skin and even edible. Furthermore, they are toxicologically harmless and environmentally compatible.

Use of glass compositions for achieving an antioxidative effect

An optical component having a diffractive element and/or refractive element is provided. The optical component includes a photosensitive glass and/or a photosensitive glass ceramic and a plurality of structures influencing propagation of light in at least a part of the photosensitive glass and/or a photosensitive glass ceramic.

Method for producing an optical component, optical component produced according to the method and devices comprising such components

A glass powder or a glass-ceramic powder is provided that includes multicomponent glasses with at least three elements, where the glass powder or a glass-ceramic powder has a mean particle size of less than 1 &#x3bc;m. In some embodiments, the mean particle size is less than 0.1 &#x3bc;m, while in other embodiments the mean particle size is less than 10 nm.

The refractive, transmissive or diffractive optical elements are made from a ceramic containing one or more oxides of the type XO, which is transmissive for visible light and/or for infrared radiation and which has a cubic crystal structure analogous to that of YO. In preferred embodiments X is Y, Sc, In, or a lanthanide element, namely La to Lu, and in particular is Lu, Yb, Gd, or La. Also mixtures of oxides of the type XOwith oxides having different stoichiometries, such as HfOand/or ZrO, may be present, as long as the cubic structure of the ceramic is maintained.

A resonant enhanced photosensitive material includes a trap center that is adapted to interact with light and enhances the photosensitivity of the material based on a resonant interaction process with photons. The invention provides enhanced photosensitivity materials and, especially a method for enhancing photosensitivity in glasses, glass ceramics and ceramics.

Resonantly enhanced photosensitivity

The method of making thin glass panes includes conveying a glass melt through a vertical inlet to a drawing tank with a slit nozzle; drawing a glass ribbon downward from the slit nozzle; setting a total throughput by setting length and cross section of the inlet and by heating and cooling the inlet to control glass melt viscosity so that pressure in the inlet decreases; and setting a throughput per unit of length in a lateral direction along the glass ribbon via nozzle system geometry and by heating and cooling of the drawing tank and slit nozzle to control melt viscosity, so that glass does not wet an underside of the slit nozzle near a breaking edge. The setting of the total throughput and the throughput per unit length are largely decoupled to simplify process control. An inventive apparatus for performing the method is also disclosed.

Abrasive compositions which include bioactive materials, such as bioactive glass and bioactive ceramics, which provide biological properties such as anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-oxidant effects, improved wound healing, and/or other beneficial effects are provided. Also provided are abrasive compositions comprising relatively non-toxic, bioinert glasses and ceramics which provide good abrasive effects, reduce or eliminate potentially harmful small particles; reduce or eliminate clogging of dermabrasion equipment; possess a relatively large surface area for applying coatings; and may be inexpensive and simple to make. Methods for abrading human or animal tissue, such as human skin, by contacting such tissue with these abrasive compositions is also provided.

The optical elements are made from an opto-ceramic material that is characterized by high density, transparency for visible light and IR, high refractive index, high Abbe number and outstanding relative partial dispersion. Mixed oxides are sintered to obtain the opto-ceramic material. The mixed oxides contain zirconium oxide and hafnium oxide mixed with one or more oxides of yttrium, scandium, lanthanide elements, and optionally mixed with one or more of SiO, NaO, and TiO. Alternatively the mixed oxides contain zirconium oxide and hafnium oxide mixed with CaO and/or MgO and optionally mixed with one or more of SiO, NaO, and TiO. In addition, the mixed oxides can also include one or more oxides of Al, Ga, In, and Sc; optionally one or more oxides of yttrium, some lanthanide elements; and optionally one or more of SiO, NaO, MgO, CaO, and TiO.

Optical elements and imaging optics comprising them

The method of protecting a polymeric plastic from attack by bacteria and fungi includes providing bioactive glass particles having a mean particles size preferably less than 2 &#x3bc;m as an additive incorporated into the polymeric plastic. The bioactive glass particles contain 40 to 60% by weight of SiO, 10 to 30% by weight of CaO, 10 to 35% by weight of NaO, 2 to 8 % by weight of PO, 0 to 25% by weight of CaF, 0 to 10% by weight of BO, 0 to 8% by weight of KO and/or 0 to 5% by weight of MgO. The additive is included in amounts of up to 25% by weight in the polymeric plastic.
