A feeder roller apparatus for high speed image scanning equipment, which improves feeding of documents, and in particular short documents, sequentially fed from a stack. The feeder apparatus comprises a PIC roller and an infeed roller which are selectively, independently driven via a dual drive shaft, composed of an inner drive shaft and an outer drive shaft, driven together or selectively, independently by a main motor. An electro-mechanical clutch, when energized is used to drive the PIC roller. A sensor is provided downstream of the rollers to recognize when a document is being fed. Initially, the clutch is energized, and both rollers are driven. When the first sheet reaches the sensor, the clutch is de-energized, cutting off the drive to the PIC roller. The main motor continues driving only the infeed roller until the first sheet is fed.

The invention is a sheet feeder including a skimmer and a separator. The separator is designed for advancing the engaged sheet while separating any adjacent sheets. In one embodiment, the separator has a driven infeed roller nipped with a drag or separator roller. The separator roller also includes a recoil mechanism. The drag normally slips and permits the separator roller to be driven forward by the infeed roller, which cocks the recoil mechanism, then allows the infeed roller to advance a sheet. The separator roller recoils backward when a multifeed of two or more sheets is engaged between the advancing and separator rollers. The sheet separator can have as its sheet-engaging member a roller sleeve. The roller sleeve can be axially slidable on the rotatable element for ready installation on and removal from the rotatable element.

Semi-active clutch assembly

The invention is a sheet feeder for engaging and removing a sheet of paper or other material from a stack and feeding it along a path. The sheet feeder can include a sheet separator designed for advancing the engaged sheet while retarding any adjacent sheets. The separator has a driven advancing roller nipped with a driven retarding roller coupled to its drive by a friction clutch. The clutch normally slips and permits the retarding roller to be driven forward by the advancing roller when one or no sheets are engaged between the advancing and retarding rollers. The clutch engages and drives the retarding roller backward so long as a multifeed of two or more sheets is engaged between the advancing and retarding rollers.

The invention is a sheet feeder for engaging and removing a sheet of paper or other material from a stack and feeding it along a path. The sheet feeder can include a skimmer, a bumper, a separator, and a guide plate. The skimmer can include a timing belt or other positive drive, so the drive motor turns the drive roller to feed sheets in a uniform manner. The skimmer element can be laterally reciprocated to assist in separation of the top sheet from lower sheets in a stack. The bumper extends across the feed path and has a guide surface positioned to confront the leading edges of the sheets of the stack and direct the leading edge of an advancing engaged single sheet away from the remainder of the stack. The separator is designed for advancing the engaged sheet while retarding any adjacent sheets. In one embodiment, a friction roller rotates on one side of the feed path, advancing a single sheet forward along the feed path. A stationary friction element positioned on the other side of the feed path is axially offset from and interleaved radially with the friction roller. The engaged sheet is gripped between the interleaved friction roller and stationary friction element. In another embodiment, the separator has a driven advancing roller nipped with a driven retarding roller coupled to its drive by a friction clutch. The clutch normally slips and permits the retarding roller to be driven forward by the advancing roller when one or no sheets are engaged between the advancing and retarding rollers. The clutch engages and drives the retarding roller backward so long as a multifeed of two or more sheets is engaged between the advancing and retarding rollers. The guide plate extends between the skimmer and the separator, extending roughly parallel to the feed path. The guide plate guides the engaged single sheet substantially along the feed path, preventing the sheet from buckling.

Feeder apparatus for documents and the like

A system for applying linerless labels to mailing items includes a label feeder for feeding a continuous length web of linerless label material from a supply roll through a loop path to a label applying station juxtaposed to the path traversed by mailing items conveyed on edge in sequential fashion by a belt conveyor. The label material passes through a web guide and advance assembly to a cutter station operative to sever the label material transversely and create labels of desired height. A paddle member is operative to engage and hold each successive label as it is being severed from the label material web generally simultaneously to adhere the adhesive side of the label against a mailing items passing through the label applying station. The various operating functions of the linerless label applying system may be coordinated by conventional control logic.

The apparatus is used to remove a generally rectangular container from an unloading device that places the container in a predetermined position. The container has a bottom surface, upstanding sidewalls and forward and rear endwalls. The apparatus includes a base portion for supporting the apparatus and a container removing arm pivotally attached to the base portion configured to releasably engage the container and remove the container from the unloading device. Also included are container engaging clamps operatively connected to the container removing arm arranged to contact and releasably engage at least one of the bottom surface, the upstanding sidewalls, the forward endwall, and the rear endwall of the container. A powered assembly pivotally displaces the container removing arm when the clamps releasably engage the container. A controller is operatively coupled to the powered assembly to selectively control forward and backward pivoting of the arm. The controller is also operatively coupled to the container engaging clamps to selectively control engagement of the clamps such that backward pivoting of the arm while the clamps engage the container facilitates removal of the container from the unloading device when the arm is pivoted in a backward direction.
