A method and system can include positioning an optical waveguide along a wellbore, and launching one or more optical signals into the waveguide at one or more optical signal frequencies and during one or more time periods, thereby resulting in one or more backscattered signals being received by the receiver, which produces a trace for each of the one of more backscattered signals. Changing an environmental condition in the wellbore, generating additional backscattered light signals at one or more frequencies after the change. Comparing the traces generated before the condition change to those generated after the change, identifying a before trace and an after trace that are substantially equal to each other and identifying a frequency difference between these traces. The frequency difference can be used to determine the amount of change in the environmental condition that occurred when the environmental change event happened.

Detecting changes in an environmental condition along a wellbore

Systems, compositions, and methods for reducing the production of water in subterranean formations having fractures or voids therein are provided. In one embodiment, the methods comprise: introducing a particulate material into a portion of a subterranean formation comprising one or more fractures or voids; and introducing a treatment fluid comprising a relative permeability modifier into the portion of the subterranean formation such that the permeability of the particulate material in the portion of the subterranean formation to water is reduced.

Methods and compositions for reducing water production in fractures or voids in subterranean formations

A method of determining characteristics of fluids flowed between a wellbore and multiple zones intersected by the wellbore can include measuring a first distributed temperature profile of the fluids along the wellbore while the fluids flow in one direction through the wellbore, and measuring a second distributed temperature profile of the fluids along the wellbore while the fluids flow in an opposite direction through the wellbore. Another method can include flowing the fluids in a first direction through an annulus formed between tubular strings in the wellbore, measuring a first distributed temperature profile of the fluids while flowing the fluids in the first direction, flowing the fluids in a second, opposite direction through the annulus, and measuring a second distributed temperature profile of the fluids along the wellbore while flowing the fluids flow in the second direction.

Bi-directional flow and distributed temperature sensing in subterranean wells

Enhancing resolution of distributed optical measurements along a wellbore can include acquiring optical signals during an acquisition time period, thereby producing a convolved profile along the wellbore, and deconvolving the profile using a first function corresponding to the acquisition time period, thereby determining a second function. Another method of enhancing resolution of distributed temperature measurements along a wellbore can include acquiring optical backscatter signals during at least first and second acquisition time periods, thereby producing respective first and second convolved temperature profiles along the wellbore; deconvolving the first temperature profile using a first function corresponding to the first time period, thereby determining a second function; and deconvolving the second temperature profile using the second function, thereby determining the first function corresponding to the second time period.
