Systems, devices, and techniques relating to network upgrade and protocol selection in wireline communication networks are described. A described network device includes ports to connect with destination devices over wireline transmission mediums, wireline transmission mediums respectively comprising at least one pair of wires for transmitting and receiving data; a packet processor configured to forward packets to and from the ports; first transceiver circuitry configured to communicate using an Ethernet protocol over at least a portion of the wireline transmission mediums; second transceiver circuitry configured to communicate using an OFDM broadband protocol over at least a portion of the wireline transmission mediums; and a controller. The controller is configured to determine a protocol used by a destination device connected with the network device, and for communications with the respective destination device, select among the first transceiver circuitry and the second transceiver circuitry based on the protocol used by the destination device.

Ethernet and OFDM multiplexing on UTP cable

An electrical device includes signal ports, transformers, and a differential mode device. The transformers are in communication with the signal ports, respectively. The transformers are configured to receive input signals, respectively, from the signal ports. Each transformer is configured to inject the respective input signal onto a pair of output lines of the transformer. The differential mode device is connected to a first output line of the pair of output lines of a first transformer exclusive of connection to a second output line of the first transformer. The differential mode device is configured to inject a signal from the first output line onto the pair of output lines of a second transformer. Signals from the pair of output lines of the second transformer are injected onto a pair of conductors, respectively, of a communications medium.

Electrical device for multiple-signal injection onto multiple-conductor communications medium

In one embodiment, a circuit couples an integrated circuit to a powerline and protects the integrated circuit from overvoltage noise. In one example, the integrated circuit comprises a two-port differential transceiver. Respective Schottky diodes couple the ports to a power supply and reference, so one diode for each port conducts current in forward bias if an applied voltage exceeds a respective voltage reference plus the forward voltage of that diode. A respective end of a first transformer winding feeds each input port. Respective ends of a second transformer winding couple to capacitors that couple with the powerline. Back-to-back zener diodes are connected between the ends of the second winding. A zener diode with a breakdown voltage set based on the power supply voltage plus a margin is coupled between the power supply and ground so that the power supply voltage does not exceed a desired value plus the margin.

Circuits and methods for protecting integrated circuits from powerline noise

An apparatus attenuates pseudo-differential signals on a plurality of conductors. The apparatus may also attenuate one or both of differential signals and common mode signals on the conductors. The signals may be Power Line Communication (PLC) signals. The apparatus includes a choke including a plurality of mutually coupled windings. The windings of the choke include a first winding and a plurality of second windings, the first winding having a number of turns equal to the sum of the number of turns of the second windings. Each of the second windings may have a substantial leakage inductance. The apparatus may further include one or more capacitors electrically coupled between windings of the choke.

Power line communication filter for multiple conductors

The present disclosure describes a device, system, and techniques for separating power line communication (PLC) signals, produced by a PLC modem, from AC mains power, which powers the PLC modem. In some aspects a universal PLC splitter is described that includes an AC mains power input with a line connection, a neutral connection, and a protective earth connection, and a filter coupling the line connection, the neutral connection, and the protective earth connection of the AC mains power input to a line connector, a neutral connector, and a protective earth connector of a socket. The filter suppresses the PLC signals on the AC mains power connections, and provides AC mains power to the socket to power the PLC modem under test. The PLC signals from the PLC modem are coupled to test signal ports for connection to test instruments.

Method and apparatus for separating power line communication (PLC) signals from mains electricity

Systems and techniques relating to wireless communications are described. A described system includes an input port configured to receive an alternating current (AC) waveform from a power line that is external to the apparatus; coupling circuitry coupled with the input port; power line communication (PLC) circuitry coupled with the coupling circuitry, configured to use the coupling circuitry to transmit and receive PLC signals via the power line, where the coupling circuitry and the PLC circuitry are electrically exposed to the AC waveform via the input port; a communication port coupled with the PLC circuitry, configured to provide PLC network access via the PLC circuitry; a filter coupled with the input port, configured to remove the PLC signals from the AC waveform and to produce a filtered AC waveform; and an output port coupled with the filter, configured to provide the filtered AC waveform.

A system for transmitting and receiving data includes a physical adaptation block configured to separate the data into a plurality of frequency bands. Each of the frequency bands has an associated symbol time, and each of the associated symbol times is a whole multiple of one half of a smallest symbol time of all of the frequency bands. An analog front end is configured to provide the data in the plurality of frequency bands to a transmission medium.

A system for detecting a Zero Crossing point is provided. The system includes: a coupling unit connected between a high voltage side and a low voltage side of the system; and a zero crossing detector connected to the high voltage side and configured to divide a filtered mains voltage signal and to generate an output signal that indicates a zero crossing point of the filtered mains voltage signal.

A transmission medium includes inductive couplers, signal lines and conductors. Each of the signal lines is configured to receive a respective one of multiple input signals. Each of the signal lines extends through at least one of the inductive couplers and is configured to inductively transmit one of the input signals to the at least one of the inductive couplers. Each of the conductors is configured to extend through at least two of the inductive couplers. The conductors include a first conductor and a second conductor. The inductive couplers are configured to inductively transmit the input signals to the conductors to generate a first current and a second current. The first current flows in the first conductor and towards an output of the first conductor. The second current flows in the second conductor and towards an input of the second conductor.
