The present disclosure relates to a method of treating a cutting tool of a cemented carbide or cermet substrate, wherein the cutting tool is subjected to shot peening at a temperature of or above 100° C. The cutting tool typically has a rake face, a flank face and a cutting edge extending therebetween. The shot peening is performed at least on the rake face of the cutting tool. The present disclosure also relates to a cutting tool treated with the method.

Method of treating a cutting tool, and a cutting tool

A cutting tool includes a cemented carbide substrate. The cemented carbide consists of hard constituents in a metallic binder. The hard constituents include WC. The WC content in the cemented carbide is 80-93 wt %. The cemented carbide has Ni and Al, and a Ni content of 3-13 wt %, a weight ratio of Co/Ni<0.33, a weight ratio of Fe/Ni<0.25, a weight ratio of Cr/Ni<0.25 and a weight ratio of 0.02<Al/(Ni+Co+Fe)<0.1. The crack resistance W is defined as the ratio of the load applied on a Vickers hardness indentation and the total crack length of the cracks formed at the corners of the Vickers hardness indentation. The product of the hardness H(rake) at the rake face and the crack resistance W(rake) at the rake face is H(rake)*W(rake)>5000 HV100*N/μm.

Cutting tool

A method of treating a sintered mining insert including cemented carbide includes the step of subjecting the mining insert to a surface hardening process. The surface hardening process is executed at an elevated temperature of or above 100° C. A mining insert is also provided, wherein the HV1 Vickers hardness measurement increase (HV1%) from the surface region, measured as an average of HV1 measurements taken at 100 μm, 200 μm and 300 μm below the surface, compared to the HV1 Vickers hardness measured in the bulk (HV1bulk), is at least 8.05-0.00350×HV1bulk.

Method of treating a mining insert

A cemented carbide including an eta phase and a Ni—Al binder is provided. The Ni—Al binder includes intermetallic y′-NiAl -precipitates embedded in a substitutional solid solution matrix of Al and Ni. A weight ratio Al/Ni of between 0.03 to 0.10, wherein a total amount of Ni and Al is between 70 to 95 wt % of the total binder A method of making a cutting tool is also provided.

Cemented carbide with alternative binder

A method of making a cutting tool includes providing a first sintered cemented carbide body of a WC, a metallic binder phase and eta phase and wherein the substoichiometric carbon content in the cemented carbide is between &#x2212;0.30 to &#x2212;0.16 wt %. The first sintered cemented carbide body is subjected to a heat treatment at a temperature of between 500 to 830&#xb0; C. for a time between 1 to 24 h. A cutting tool made according to the above method having an increased resistance against comb cracks is also provided.

A coated cutting tool includes a substrate of cemented carbide and a coating. The cemented carbide is made of WC and a binder phase of one or more of Co, Fe and Ni. The carbon content in the cemented carbide is a substoichiometric carbon content SCC, wherein &#x2212;0.13 wt %&#x2264;SCC&#x3c;0 wt %, or &#x2212;0.30 wt %&#x2264;SCC&#x2264;&#x2212;0.16 wt %. The coating includes one or more layers being a metal carbide, metal nitride or metal carbonitride, the metal being at least one of Zr and Hf, and wherein Ti is present in an amount of at most 10 at-% of the amount metal. The one or more layers is situated between the substrate and the aluminum oxide layer.

Coated cutting tool

The present disclosure relates to a cutting tool of a cemented carbide substrate including WC and a binder phase having one or more of Co, Fe and Ni, wherein the cemented carbide also includes a finely dispersed eta phase of Me12C and/or Me6C carbides, where Me is one or more metals selected from W, Mo and the binder phase metals, wherein the substoichiometric carbon content in the cemented carbide is between &#x2212;0.30 to &#x2212;0.16 wt %. The disclosed cutting tool will achieve an improved resistance against comb cracks.

The use of cryogenic coolant in a machining operation in Ti, Ti-alloys or Ni-alloys together with a cutting tool of a cemented carbide substrate with a gradient surface zone with a thickness of between 50-400 &#x3bc;m is provided. The cemented carbide substrate has a binder phase gradient with the lowest binder phase content in the outermost part of the gradient surface zone and the cemented carbide having graphite. The arrangement leads to a significantly prolonged tool life.

Method of machining Ti, Ti-alloys and Ni-based alloys

A cutting tool has a substrate of cemented carbide including WC and a binder phase. The cutting tool has a gradient surface zone with a thickness of between 50-400 &#x3bc;m having a binder phase gradient with the lowest binder phase content in the outermost part of the gradient surface zone and wherein the cutting tool also includes free graphite. The present disclosure also relates to a method of making a cutting tool according to the above. The cemented carbide body shows improved resistance towards chemical wear when used for machining non-ferrous alloys such as Ti-alloys and Ni-based alloys.

A process of manufacturing cemented carbide and to a product obtained thereof, wherein hex doped WC is subjected to nitrogen before and/or during sintering.

The present invention relates to a method of making a cemented carbide comprising mixing in a slurry a first powder fraction and a second powder fraction, subjecting the slurry to milling, drying, pressing and sintering. The first powder fraction is made from cemented carbide scrap recycled using the Zn recovery process, comprising the elements W, C, Co, and at least one or more of Ta, Ti, Nb, Cr, Zr, Hf and Mo, and the second powder fraction comprising virgin raw materials of WC and possibly carbides and/or carbonitrides of one or more of Cr, Zr, W, Ta, Ti, Hf and Nb. The first powder fraction is subjected to a pre-milling step, prior to the step of forming the slurry, to obtain an average grain size of between 0.2 to 1.5 &#x3bc;m.

Method of making a cemented carbide

The present disclosure relates to a method of making a sintered cutting body having a side with binder metal capping and another side without binder metal capping. The disclosure also relates to a sintered cutting body produced according to the method.
