Techniques for transmitting data packets on a shared channel in a data communications network include storing, on a local node, a current number of turns in a transmitting queue and a current turn based on packets received from other nodes on the channel. For a first local data packet to transmit, a local transmit turn is obtained based on successfully transmitting the packet in a time interval following a last turn in the queue. A data link layer header includes queue fields for the current number of turns, the local transmit turn, and a request for adding the local transmit turn. While there is still a remaining packet to transmit and when the current turn is the local transmit turn, the packet is transmitted with queue fields indicating the current number of turns, the current turn, and an indication of no new turn. An acknowledgement control packet indicates successful transmission.

Techniques for avoiding collisions among communications packets by using shared transmission queue

Techniques include retrieving from storage a plurality of policies for sharing a shared channel among nodes in a data communications network. The plurality of polices define a tree of periodic schedules of variable periods, each policy defines a transmit time slot as a unique slot i of a modulus of a power m of a base b of a series of time slots, where m indicates a level of the tree of periodic schedules. The method also includes; observing at a first node the probabilities of empty time slots, successful time slots, and collision time slots on the shared channel; selecting at the first node a first policy among the plurality of policies based on the probabilities observed instead of a message received from a central authority; and transmitting a local data packet from the first node onto the shared channel at a transmit time based on the first policy.

Techniques for periodic transmission of communications packets

Techniques for transmitting data packets on a shared channel in a data communications network, include determining a time slot interval, T, based on a longest data packet to be transmitted on a shared channel in a data communications network. At a first node in the data communications network a local base time, t, is determined equal to a time at an end of receipt of a successful acknowledgement control packet on the shared channel. A local data packet is transmitted from the first node onto the shared channel at a transmit time that is an integer multiple n of T after the local base time t. The local data packet is determined to be successfully transmitted when a successful acknowledgement control packet that uniquely indicates the local data packet is received on the shared channel within the interval T of transmitting the local data packet.

Techniques for virtual time slotting of communications packets

Techniques for routing in communications networks include determining a state of a destination node in a current routing table stored at a first node. A value for a reference cost to the destination node is determined based on a minimum cost to the destination in the current routing table. Based on the state, a request message is formed including a reference distance field to prevent loops, an originating node field, a destination field, and a previous hop field. The request message is sent to a different second node within range. A record that indicates the data in the request message is stored in a pending request table. A reply message is received in response to sending the request message. In response to receiving the reply message, the record in the pending request table is removed, and the current routing table is updated based on the reply message.

Techniques for loop-free dynamic on-demand and proactive routing in communications networks

Techniques for collision avoidance on a current receiving network node using a half duplex wireless transceiver include, in response to receiving a request to transmit a variable length data message from a first node, transmitting a clear to transmit message that indicates the first node followed by transmitting a physical layer first pilot message. In some circumstances, the techniques include transmitting an acknowledgement message that indicates the first node, only in response to successfully receiving the variable length data message that indicates the first node followed by receiving a physical layer second pilot message. The second pilot message can be detected using either or both of energy detection and preamble detection.

Collision avoidance in multi-hop ad-hoc networks using half duplex transceivers

A content-name-resolution (CNR) system can resolve IP addresses for named data objects (NDOs) based on their name. During operation, a CNR server can receive a query from a client device for a source to a named data object. The query can include at least a name prefix for the named data object. The CNR server can identify a cache server that corresponds to the named data object's name prefix, and determines one or more sources associated with the named data object's name prefix. The CNR server then returns, to the client device, a query response that includes a network address for the cache server, and includes a content record specifying the one or more sources.

Content name resolution for information centric networking

One embodiment of the present invention provides a router in an information-centric network (ICN). The router includes a receiving module configured to receive an interest for a piece of content. The interest indicates a name associated with the piece of content. The router also includes an interest-processing module configured to: determine whether the interest can be forwarded; in response to determining that the interest can be forwarded to a second router, select an identifier from a set of identifiers assigned to the router by the second router; and process the interest by inserting the identifier into the interest. The router further includes a forwarding module configured to forward the processed interest to the second router.

System and method for stateless information-centric networking

One embodiment of the present invention provides a system for content exchange in an information-centric network (ICN). During operation, a first node in the ICN receives an interest for a piece of content from a second node. The interest indicates a name of the piece of content and an incoming identifier assigned to the interest by the second node. The system identifies a matching entry in an identifier table stored on the first node that corresponds to the incoming identifier. The matching entry indicates a next-hop neighbor and an outgoing identifier. The system then updates the interest by replacing the incoming identifier with the outgoing identifier, and forwards the updated interest to the next-hop neighbor.

System and method for on-demand content exchange with adaptive naming in information-centric networks

One embodiment of the present invention provides a system for correctly processing interests in an information-centric network (ICN). During operation, the system receives, by a first node in the ICN, an interest for a piece of content from a second node. The interest specifies a name of the content piece. The system determines, based on forwarding information and information associated with pending interests stored on the first node, whether a forwarding condition or an interest aggregation condition is satisfied. In response to the forwarding condition being satisfied, the system forwards the interest. In response to the interest aggregation condition being satisfied, the system aggregates the interest.

System and method for eliminating undetected interest looping in information-centric networks

One embodiment of the present invention provides a system for correctly processing an interest in a content-centric network (CCN). During operation, a first node in the CCN receives an interest for a piece of content from a second node. The interest indicates a name of the piece of content and a hop count from the second node to a destination node advertising the piece of content. The system determines, based on forwarding information and information associated with pending interests stored on the first node, whether a distance-based forwarding condition is met; and in response to the distance-based forwarding condition being met, accepts the interest.

System and method for distance-based interest forwarding

One embodiment provides a system that facilitates a large-scale mobile ad hoc network to adapt to specific needs of wireless nodes in a mobile wireless network. During operation, a controller node collects state information associated with one or more wireless nodes. The controller node allocates one or more network elements based on the collected state information and a predetermined utility-based technique. Responsive to the allocation of the one or more network elements, the controller node reconfigures a logical topology of the mobile wireless network by using software-defined mobile ad hoc network nodes, thereby facilitating a large-scale mobile ad hoc network to adapt to specific application needs of wireless nodes.

One embodiment provides a mobile ad-hoc network (MANET). The MANET includes a plurality of mobile nodes and a centralized controller node. The controller node includes a receiving mechanism configured to receive, from a source mobile node, a request for a service, with the request including an identifier associated with the requested service; an identification mechanism configured to identify a destination mobile node that provides the service associated with the identifier; a path-computation mechanism configured to compute a path between the source mobile node and the destination mobile node using a network graph for the mobile nodes; and a path-sending mechanism configured to send the computed path to at least the destination mobile node, which facilitates establishing a route between the source mobile node and the destination mobile node.

Service-oriented routing in software-defined MANETs

One embodiment provides a mobile wireless network that includes a plurality of wireless nodes and a controller node which manages a weighted network graph for the plurality of wireless nodes. A local wireless node sends a route-request message associated with at least one destination node to the controller node, receives a path to the destination node, and routes a packet to the destination node based on the received path. The path is computed based on the weighted network graph. One embodiment provides a system for routing in a mobile wireless network that comprises a plurality of wireless nodes. The system receives a route-request message associated with at least one destination node from a source node, computes a path between the source node and the destination node based on a weighted network graph for the plurality of wireless nodes, and transmits the computed path to at least the destination node.
