A subsurface representation that includes geometry and material properties of subsurface geological formations may be generated. To compute the initial (pre-production) state of stress, gravitational forces and tectonic forces may be applied to the subsurface representation. These loads may result in stress and displacement fields within the subsurface representation. The stress field may be calibrated against available measurements. At this point, the subsurface representation may be reinitialized by resetting the displacements within the subsurface representation while maintaining the stress field.

Subsurface characteristic modeling

Embodiments of generating a self-consistent earth model are provided. One embodiment comprises: a) building a structured geologic; b) generating a mineralogy volume; c) generating a porosity volume and a density volume; d) generating a pressure volume; e) generating a geophysical property volume comprising a P-wave velocity volume and a S-wave velocity volume, a relationship between P-wave velocity and S-wave velocity, or any combination thereof; f) generating mechanical elastic properties based on (i) a static to dynamic elastic property relationship and (ii) the geophysical property volume, the relationship between P-wave velocity and S-wave velocity, or any combination thereof; and g) performing mechanical earth modeling using the mechanical elastic properties, the density volume, and the pressure volume to generate a self-consistent earth model.

System and method for generating an earth model

A system and method for optimizing a drilling operation is provided. The system has a drilling a drilling operation optimization unit. The drilling operation optimization unit has a base model unit for producing a base model of the reservoir and a reservoir stress unit for producing a three dimensional stress model of the reservoir. The drilling operation optimization unit has a trajectory unit for determining at least one property for at least one wellbore trajectory based on the base model and the three dimensional stress model, wherein each of the wellbore trajectories is selectable by an operator. The system has an operator station for inputting data into the drilling operation optimization unit at the wellsite and a drilling tool for forming a wellbore along at least one of the at least one selected wellbore trajectories.
