Various embodiments comprise apparatuses and methods including a communications subsystem having an interface module and a protocol module with the communications subsystem being configured to be coupled to an antenna. An applications subsystem includes a software applications module and an abstraction module. The software applications module is to execute an operating system and user applications; the abstraction module is to provide an interface with the software applications module. A controller interface module is coupled to the abstraction module and the interface module and is to convert signals from the applications subsystem into signals that are executable by the communications subsystem. A method of transferring data includes receiving unprocessed data and processing the data into processed data. On the basis of a predetermined criteria, unprocessed data or processed data is transmitted. By choosing to transmit unprocessed data or processed data to a receiving site, which maybe processed at the receiving site, faster transmission times can be achieved.

A subscriber unit in a telephone network may receive personalized services from a network by providing personalized software to the network. The subscriber unit may prepare or have prepared particular personal agent software that implements certain enhanced functions designed by or for the subscriber. That software may then be uploaded to the network. Upon the occurrence of a certain event, the personal agent software is executed by the network to provide the personalized service desired by the subscriber. In some cases, the network may afford a variety of primitives which may implement basic functions that may be called by the personal agent software.

A communication transceiver may include a communications subsystem and an application subsystem. When one of the subsystems wishes to power down to save power, the other subsystem may defer or otherwise alter activities to accommodate and thereby synchronize with the powered down state of the other subsystem. This avoids unnecessarily recalling the powered down subsystem from the sleep mode and may result, in some embodiments, in improved efficiencies and reduced power consumption.
