System and method for optically verified sample authentication are described herein. An example system includes a detection device to authenticate a sample and to return a positive authentication result if the sample is authentic and return a negative authentication result if the sample is not authentic, the detection device containing an optical emitter to emit a series of pulses of light in a first sequential pattern, a smartphone in close proximity to and facing the detection device and the sample, the smartphone containing a camera to detect the first sequential pattern of light, and a database to store data from the smartphone, wherein the optical emitter emits the first sequential pattern of light before the detection device authenticates the sample, the smartphone captures a first image of the detection device after the smartphone detects the first sequential pattern of light emitted by the optical emitter, and the smartphone transmits first data to the database after the detection device authenticates the sample.

Optically verified sample authentication

A system to authenticate and identify items is described herein. An example apparatus includes an illuminating source to illuminate a sample with a first emission of light having a peak wavelength at a first wavelength and a second emission of light having a peak wavelength at a second wavelength, a photo element to detect a first optical response emitted by the sample after the first emission of light and to detect a second optical response emitted by the sample after the second emission of light, and an identifier to identify the sample based on the first optical response and the second optical response.

An example apparatus includes a first strand that is electrically conductive, the first strand being embedded with a first set of particles, wherein the first set of particles have a first optical response when they are illuminated by light having a first wavelength.

A multi-layer optical barcode with security features is described herein. An example method includes illuminating a first phosphor layer on a substrate with light having a first wavelength, wherein the first phosphor layer has luminescent properties such that when it is illuminated by light having the first wavelength, it emits light having a second wavelength, the first phosphor layer is divided into a first two-dimensional grid of cells arranged in a first spatial pattern, wherein each cell of the first phosphor layer corresponds to one bit of an identification code, a first portion of the first phosphor layer is removed from a first number of cells of the first two-dimensional grid of cells to expose the substrate for the first number of cells, capturing a first image of the light emitted by the first phosphor layer having the second wavelength, determining whether the first phosphor layer is authentic based on the first image, and determining the identification code based on the first image.

Methods and apparatus for variable data printing for security purposes using ceramic sub-micron infrared-luminescent particles in inkjet ink. An example apparatus includes an inkjet printer containing marked ink, the marked ink containing particles consisting of rare earth doped ceramics, wherein the particles are less than one micron in size, the particles are suspended in the marked ink, and the particles have luminescent properties such that when the particles are illuminated by first electromagnetic radiation having a first wavelength, the particles emit infrared light having a peak wavelength at a second wavelength.
