The present invention relates to a programmable multicore photonic integrated circuit comprising at least one programmable photonic modules or cores, and/or other photonic units like specific high performance blocks, capable of implementing multipurpose signal processing, by the appropriate programming of its resources, routing within the circuits and the blocks to achieve multifunctional operation and the selection of its input and output ports. The invention also relates to a scalable programmable photonic integrated circuits arranged in a modular multicore approach to increase the processing power of the overall system and/or adding a multitude of functionalities enabled by complex photonics circuitry and parallelization as well as the related operation methods.

Programmable photonic integrated circuit and related method of operation

The present invention relates to a photonic chip carried out by the combination and interconnection of equally-oriented Programmable Photonics Processing Blocks, with all their longitudinal axes in parallel, implemented over a photonic chip that is capable of implementing one or multiple, simultaneous photonics circuits with optical feedback paths and/or linear multiport transformations, by the appropriate programming of its resources and the selection of its input and output ports. The invention also relates to a parallel field-programmable photonic array (P-FPPA) comprising of, at least one programmable circuit based on equally-oriented/parallel tunable beam-splitters with independent coupling and phase-shifting configuration and peripheral high-performance building blocks.

The method object of the invention enables the scalable configuration and performance optimisation to be carried out for programmable optical circuits based on meshed structures, in such a way that they can perform optical/quantum signal processing functions. The object of the invention can be applied in circuits with arbitrary degrees of complexity implemented by means of programming a waveguide mesh. The method object of the invention enables not only the analysis and evaluation of performance to be carried out, but also the subsequent programming and optimisation of programmable optical devices.

Method of configuration and optimisation of programmable photonic devices

The present invention discloses a directional photonic coupler () with independent tuning of the coupling factor and phase difference. The coupler comprises: two waveguides (), with respective propagation constants '&#x3b2;, &#x3b2;', on which phase shifters () configured to modify the propagation coefficients are located. Both phase shifters are configured such that, by independent modification (differential or unique) of the propagation coefficients, the power coupling factor (K) between an input signal (or) and the output signals (and) is tuned, and by equal and simultaneous modification of the propagation coefficients, the common phase difference of the optical output signals () is tuned. A third phase shifter () can be used to retune the phase difference at the input/output of one of the waveguides. The coupler is of particular interest in PIC circuits, coupled resonators, Mach-Zehnder interferometers and mesh structures.

The present invention relates to a photonic chip realized by combining at least one Programmable Photonics Analog Block (PPAB) and at least one Reconfigurable Photonic Interconnection (RPI) implemented over a photonic chip that is capable of implementing one or various simultaneous photonics circuits and/or linear multipart transformations by the appropriate programming of its resources (i.e. PPABs and RPIs) and the selection of its input and output ports. The invention also relates to a field-programmable photonic array (FPPA) comprising at least a programmable circuit based on tunable beamsplitters with independent coupling and phase-sifting configuration and peripheral high-performance building blocks.

Photonic chip, field programmable photonic array and programmable circuit

This document describes a photonic device which makes it possible to both separate and combine bands of wavelengths in optical signals. To this end, the device described herein has a star coupler, a set of optical input waveguides connected to the input port of the star coupler, a waveguide grouping connected to the output port of the start coupler and a set of reflectors and phase shifters connected to said waveguide grouping. This document also provides details of a manufacturing process of the previously described device and a method for handling optical signals that makes use thereof.

Photonic integrated device

The invention relates to a tuneable AWG device for multiplexing and demultiplexing signals and to a method for tuning said device. The inventive device is an integrated-optic device which enables a signal made up of a plurality of signals multiplexed by wavelength division to be injected through an input port such as to obtain, at the output, a demultiplexed signal with each component exiting via a different port. If the multiplexed signal is changed to another input port, the demultiplexed signals appear at different ports, but always according to a pre-determined relationship. The invention makes it possible to tune the AWG device by using stationary acoustic waves such that the acoustically excited optical guides are excited by a linear acoustic wave.
