A control system to control slip of a torque converter clutch includes a clutch plant model configured to predict a value of a parameter that relates to torque converter clutch slip as a function of clutch plant model inputs comprising commanded clutch pressure and of torque from the torque generative device. The control system also includes a model predictive controller configured to receive signals that allow determination of a desired value of the parameter that relates to torque converter clutch slip and a predicted value of the parameter that relates to torque converter clutch slip, receive a signal representing reported torque of the torque generative device, identify an optimal commanded clutch pressure value that will result in an optimal value of an objective function based on the clutch plant model, and provide a command signal to an actuator effective to control commanded clutch pressure to the torque converter clutch.

Model predictive control of torque converter clutch slip

A powertrain includes a torque generative device and a torque converter having an impeller, a turbine and a torque converter clutch. A method to control torque converter slip includes a feedforward component and a feedback component. The feedforward component includes monitoring a reference slip, and actual slip, and a turbine speed of the torque converter, determining a desired turbine torque based upon the reference slip and the turbine speed, determining an actual turbine torque based upon the actual slip and the turbine speed, determining a feedforward torque converter clutch pressure command based upon the desired turbine torque, the actual turbine torque, a torque generative device torque, and a TCC gain, and determining feedforward torque converter clutch pressure command. The feedback component modifies the feedforward command pressure based on proportional plus integral plus differential (PID) slip feedback terms.

Torque converter clutch slip control

A target engine speed module selectively sets M target engine speeds for M future times, respectively, based on one of increasing and decreasing an engine speed. A prediction module, based on a set of possible target values for the M future times and a model of an engine, determines M predicted engine speeds for the M future times, respectively. A cost module determines a cost for the set of possible target values based on comparisons of the M predicted engine speeds for the M future times with the M target engine speeds for the M future times, respectively. A selection module, based on the cost, selects the set of possible target values from a group including the set of possible target values and N other sets of possible target values, and sets target values based on the selected set of possible target values. An actuator module controls an engine actuator based on a first one of the target values.

Engine speed control systems and methods

A system according to the principles of the present disclosure includes a boost control module and a temperature estimation module. The boost control module generates a wastegate command signal to control a position of a wastegate and thereby adjust an amount of exhaust gas allowed to bypass a turbine of a turbocharger through the wastegate. The temperature estimation module estimates at least one of a first temperature downstream from the turbine and a second temperature upstream from the turbine based on the wastegate command signal.

A control system includes a cylinder pressure sensor (CPS) that senses a cylinder pressure of an engine and generates a CPS signal based on the cylinder pressure. A CPS failure detection module selectively generates a failure signal based on characteristics of the CPS signal in a knock frequency range. A status detection module generates a CPS status signal based on the CPS signal and the failure signal.

A control system includes a speed determination module and a profile estimation module. The speed determination module determines previous engine speeds based on a predetermined profile of a crankshaft position sensor and previous pulse times corresponding to teeth on the crankshaft position sensor. The profile estimation module performs data fitting to determine an estimated profile of the crankshaft position sensor based on the previous pulse times and the previous engine speeds. The speed determination module determines present engine speeds based on the estimated profile and present pulse times corresponding to the teeth on the crankshaft position sensor.

Control system and method based on estimated engine speed

A method and a control module for performing the same include a filter module filtering in-cylinder pressure signals using a filter to form filtered in-cylinder pressure signals. The control module further includes a heat release rate determination module generating heat release rate signals based on the in-cylinder pressure signals and a maximum heat rate determination module determining a maximum heat release rate from the heat release rate signals. The system also includes a correction module correcting auto-ignition for the engine based on the maximum heat release rate.

Method and system for detecting and reducing engine auto-ignition

A control system for an engine includes a heat-release rate (HRR) module, a first filter module, a second filter module, an auto-ignition energy determination module, and a corrective action module. The HRR module generates an HRR signal based on in-cylinder pressures of a cylinder of the engine. The first filter module generates a first filtered HRR signal indicative of a first HRR due to combustion in the cylinder by filtering the HRR signal. The second filter module generates a second filtered HRR signal indicative of a second HRR due to auto-ignition in the cylinder by filtering one of the HRR signal and the first filtered HRR signal. The auto-ignition energy determination module determines an auto-ignition energy of the cylinder based on the first and second filtered HRR signals. The corrective action module selectively adjusts auto-ignition of the engine based on the auto-ignition energy. A related method is also provided.
