A system and method are provided for the detection of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) using a staged approach for accurate and rapid detection. Physiological signals in a patient's body are sensed and corresponding physiological parameters are derived in a staged approach in order to determine the probability that AMI is occurring in a patient in a first detection stage. If the computed probability from physiological signals indicates the possibility of AMI, then the patient is prompted, such as through a patient-wearable device, to answer specific AMI-related questions to assist in diagnosis of AMI in a second stage. AMI is detected when the computed probability in the second stage exceeds a predefined detection threshold. A patient or physician alert may then be generated, which may further include the transfer of data via a communication link or network, in response to an AMI detection signal.

A medical device system and method for monitoring a patient include a monitoring device for storing data relating to the patient and a digital pen for digitizing and storing data handwritten by the patient. A control module is configured to aggregate data stored by the monitoring device and handwritten data stored by the digital pen.

Digital pen to capture data in ambulatory monitored patients

An implantable medical device identifies onset and/or progression of left ventricular dysfunction (LVD). The implantable medical device receives a signal that represents electrical activity within a heart, e.g., an electrogram signal, and digitally processes the signal to assess left ventricular function. In particular, the implantable medical device measures at least one characteristic of QRS complexes within the signal, and assesses left ventricular function based on measurements. The implantable medical device may, for example, measure the width of the QRS complexes and/or the amplitude of the R-waves within the QRS complexes. The implantable medical device may alert a patient or clinician of the onset or progression of LVD, and may control delivery of therapies, such as rate-responsive pacing and cardiac resynchronization pacing, based on the measurements. The implantable medical device may also control delivery of a drug by an implanted drug delivery device, e.g., drug pump, based on the measurements.

An implantable medical device operates to promote intrinsic ventricular depolarization according to a pacing protocol. The medical device monitors the AV interval and adjusts the Ventricular Pacing Protocol if the AV interval exceeds a threshold when the cardiac rate is elevated.

The invention provides a system and method for easy and reliable connection of patient-originated medical data through a simple port of a computer to a dedicated web site. A device originating medical data, such as an implanted pacemaker, downloads data into a transmit/receive device, and the data is then transformed in an interface unit to be accepted by a simple port of a computer, e.g. a keyboard port or a mouse port. The patient logs on to a dedicated web site, and transfers the data along with typed input to the web site for analysis. Following analysis, a reply message is sent back to the patient, which may include a control instruction for modifying or reprogramming the operation of the device that is used to originate the medical data. For a pacemaker application, the data transformation is done at a simple interface unit that is portable and easily manipulated by the patient. For other applications such as monitoring data from a diabetic, the data is transformed by the interface unit, and may be stored daily in the PC and transmitted to the web site after collection of a predetermined number of days of data.

System and method for transmission of medical and like data from a patient to a dedicated internet website

There is provided a rate responsive pacemaker with the capability of dynamically changing the rate response control algorithm. Periodic measurements of the rate response correlation function provide information for determining any desired adjustment to the correlation function. A learning routine tracks changes in the measurements, and from this history automatically adjusts the interval between measurements to optimize the frequency of such measurements. The pacemaker of this invention further provides for an improved adaptation of the rate response function post-implant, by providing for multiple measurements and rate function adjustments daily in order to more quickly adapt the initially set function to patient conditions.
