A method of generating an embedded system () from an original computer program () which embedded system () provides a parallellized hardware () and software () implementation of the original computer program (), which parallellized implementation () satisfies one or more criteria regarding hardware constraints of the embedded system (). The system provides partitioning of functionality from the original computer program () using structural and behavioral program models and detects streaming and memory dependencies to improve the partitioning, relying on added indications of source lines and variables in said original computer program to relate partitions and dependencies in the program model with locations in the original program source code.

Embedded system performance

A computer-implemented method of automatically generating an embedded system on the basis of an original computer program, comprising analyzing the original computer program, comprising a step of compiling the original computer program into an executable to obtain data flow graphs with static data dependencies and a step of executing the executable using test data to provide dynamic data dependencies as communication patterns between load and store operations of the original computer program, and a step of transforming the original computer program into an intermediary computer program that exhibits multi-threaded parallelism with inter-thread communication, which comprises identifying at least one static and/or dynamic data dependency that crosses a thread boundary and converting said data dependency into a buffered communication channel with read/write access.

Embedded system development

Various methods for performing rounding operations in a computer processor are described. A machine instruction sets the rounding mode, which is automatically applied to subsequent machine instructions. Using machine instructions to round results according to the selected rounding mode has several advantages over software-implemented rounding techniques, such as faster execution and concise code. A variety of rounding modes can be specified. Depending in part on the specified rounding mode and on the sign of the value to be rounded, a rounding term is added to the value to be rounded. Adding this rounding term ensures that the desired result is obtained. The value thus obtained is then right-shifted.

Rounding operations in computer processor

Super functional units are used to execute not only single super-instructions that take more than one issue slot, but also a number of equivalent regular VLIW instructions. Accordingly, the same hardware can thus be used to execute either a superoperation or a combination of regular operations, potentially combined with other smaller superoperations. Using super functional units in this way promotes efficient use of computing resources by making computing resources that might otherwise be used unnecessarily by superoperations available for use by single-slot instructions or by smaller superoperations. In some embodiments, a compiler analyzes program and other data to identify superoperations that can be reduced to equivalent single-slot instructions. The compiler maps these operations to a single slot of a super functional unit, reducing the computing resources occupied by the operation.
