This invention relates to the treatment of varying degrees of cognitive impairment associated with, for example, aging, Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia with low dose administration of a PDE4 inhibitor, specifically roflumilast.

Compounds of formula (I), wherein Z=cyclopentyl. cyclopropylmethyl, &#x2014;CH; R'&#x2550;&#x2014;CH, CHF, X=formula (II) (III) (IV) (V) Y=&#x2014;CO; &#x2014;C&#x2550;O(CH), &#x2014;CH(OH)&#x2014;CH, &#x2014;CH&#x2014;C&#x2550;O, &#x2014;CH&#x2014;CH&#x2014;C&#x2550;O; &#x2014;CH&#x2014;CH(OH)&#x2014;CH, &#x2014;CH&#x2014;CH(OCOR)&#x2014;CHNR&#x2550; &#x2014;N(CH&#x2014;CHOH), formula (VI) (VII) (VIII) (IX) (X) (XI) R=optionally substituted C-Calkyl, optionally substituted aryl; optionally substituted aralkyl, preferably C-Calkyl, more preferably CH; and enantiomers, diastereoisomers and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof; these compounds have a PDE4D inhibiting activity and can be used as a medicament for treating dementia, in particular Alzheimer disease, and for improving memory.
