A method to analyze full waveform multiple (i.e., monopoles, dipoles, quadrupoles) acoustic measurements in a fluid-filled borehole, surrounded by a system of fractures oriented parallel to the axis of the borehole. The method uses new measurement attributes, herein referred to as dual flexure waves and leaky fracture mode.

Method for detecting, locating, and characterizing single and multiple fluid-filled fractures in fractured formations

A method for planning continuity logging surveys and for detecting the presence of a continuous or discontinuous low-velocity inclusion in a subterranean geological formation. To detect the presence of a continuous or discontinuous low-velocity inclusion, a seismic source is inserted into a source borehole located at either a boundary or a center of a low velocity inclusion. Seismic energy is generated coupled to the low-velocity inclusion using the seismic source. The seismic energy propagates as seismic waves through the low-velocity inclusion and is measured and recorded by at least one detector disposed in a receiver borehole. The seismic waves are analyzed for the presence of at least one seismic signature from which the distance of a discontinuity, if any, of the low-velocity inclusion with respect to the receiver borehole can be determined.

Method for predicting continuous and discontinuous waveguide targets

An apparatus and method of high resolution reverse vertical seismic profile (VSP) measurements is shown. By encapsulating the seismic detector and heaters in a meltable substance (such as wax), the seismic detector can be removably secured in a borehole in a manner capable of measuring high resolution signals in the 100 to 1000 hertz range and higher. The meltable substance is selected to match the overall density of the detector package with the underground formation, yet still have relatively low melting point and rigid enough to transmit vibrations to accelerometers in the seismic detector. To minimize voids in the meltable substance upon solidification, the meltable substance is selected for minimum shrinkage, yet still having the other desirable characteristics. Heaters are arranged in the meltable substance in such a manner to allow the lowermost portion of the meltable substance to cool and solidify first. Solidification continues upwards from bottom-to-top until the top of the meltable substance is solidified and the seismic detector is ready for use. To remove, the heaters melt the meltable substance and the detector package is pulled from the borehole.

Reversible rigid coupling apparatus and method for borehole seismic

A method and apparatus for collecting measurements on the surface of the earth in a form which can be processed to obtain enhanced resolution of subsurface resistivity anomalies in the earth's geologic structure. The system of the preferred embodiment utilizes many separately acquired voltage and current measurements on the earth's surface in a superposition analysis to 'synthesize' the condition whereby the many separate measurements are acquired simultaneously to give useful advantages in improved depth of investigation commonly known as focused resistivity measurements.
