A device for depositing a material layer on a surface of a workpiece has a deposition facility with a hollow shoulder that is rotatable about an axis relative to a base. The shoulder has an indentation that is limited by a circumferential annular face. A passage opening, which is smaller in diameter than the indentation, is formed in the shoulder along the axis. The shoulder is rotated and a deposition material is fed through the passage opening into the indentation where it is plasticized in the indentation. The deposition facility is moved over the surface in such a way that the indentation points towards the surface and a workpiece plane runs tangentially to the surface at the point at which the axis intersects the surface. The annular face is distanced from the surface such that plasticized deposition material is deposited on the surface. A related deposition method is also provided.

Device and method for the deposition of a material layer on a surface area of a workpiece

An apparatus for friction stir welding includes a rotatably drivable pin having a drive end and a free end; a cylindrical engaging portion provided between the drive end and the free end and including a circumferential surface for engagement with one or more workpieces; and first and second shoulder elements arranged concentrically around the pin and positioned on respective sides of the of the engaging portion adjacent the drive end and the free end, respectively. The first and second shoulder elements include respective first and second bearing surfaces facing the engaging portion and extending perpendicularly to the axis of rotation. The mechanical and thermal loading of the pin and the thermal loading of the workpieces are reduced by merit of the second shoulder element being connected to the pin so as to be freely rotatable about the axis of rotation.

Apparatus for friction stir welding

A friction welding tool having a pin and a clamping device with a counter bearing, a holddown element and a spring element. The pin has a coupling section for releasable, rotationally fixed coupling to a rotating output device of a machine tool. The counter bearing is held on the pin between the pin's coupling and engagement ends in a manner that allows the counter bearing to be axially immovable on but freely rotatable about a longitudinal axis of the pin. The holddown element surrounds the pin and is arranged on a side of the counter bearing facing the engagement end. The holddown element has a bearing surface for bearing on the workpiece arrangement. The spring element is provided between the holddown element and the counter bearing and is mounted on the pin in such a way that it is elastically slidable along the longitudinal axis of the pin.

Friction stir welding tool

The present invention relates to a method for connecting a metal workpiece and a plastic workpiece by means of a joining tool, including positioning the metal workpiece and the plastic workpiece, bringing the front end of the pin, the sleeve and the clamping ring in contact with an outer surface of the metal workpiece, rotating the sleeve and the pin so as to generate friction between the front ends of the sleeve and the pin and the outer surface of the metal workpiece, and moving the pin and the sleeve in the axial direction while both are rotated, one of the sleeve and the pin penetrating into the metal workpiece and the other of the sleeve and the pin being retracted from the outer surface thereof. The axial movement into the metal workpiece is stopped before the one of the sleeve and the pin reaches the contact surface and after stopping the axial movement the one of the sleeve and the pin is retracted from the metal workpiece and the other is moved towards the outer surface of the metal surface until the front ends of the pin and the sleeve are on the same level.

Method for joining metal and plastic workpieces

A method for connecting a plastic workpiece to a further workpiece. The method includes inserting a pin on the plastic workpiece through a through-opening in the further workpiece and abutting the first and second workpieces against one another. A friction tool, which has a clamping ring and a friction pin, is engaged to the pin and the friction pin is rotated so that frictional heat produced by friction between the friction pin and the pin brings the pin into a plastic state. The rotating friction pin is moved parallel to the axis of rotation toward the working surface so that the pin is plastically deformed.

Method for connecting a plastic workpiece to a further workpiece

A method of connecting a plastic workpiece to a further workpiece and a device for carrying out the method are shown and described. The object of providing a method with which a positive-locking connection between a plastic workpiece and a further workpiece can be produced in a short time and without considerable outlay in terms of apparatus is achieved by a method comprising the following steps: providing a plastic workpiece and a further workpiece, placing the further workpiece against the plastic workpiece, providing a connecting element on a surface of the plastic workpiece, this surface being opposite the surface against which the further workpiece bears, producing a recess in the further workpiece, this recess being provided on the surface bearing against the plastic workpiece, heating the connecting element, so that the material of the connecting element is plasticized, and pressing plasticized material into the recess.

Method and device for connecting a plastic workpiece to a further workpiece

The present invention relates to a method for producing a welded connection between a first workpiece and a second workpiece comprising the following steps: providing a first workpiece and a second workpiece, arranging the second workpiece on a surface of the first workpiece, placing a friction tool by the friction area thereof onto that surface of the second workpiece which is remote from the first workpiece, and rotating the friction tool, with the result that a welded connection is formed between the first workpiece and the second workpiece, the friction area rubbing on that surface of the second workpiece which is remote from the first workpiece, and the contact region between the friction area and the second workpiece running completely in that surface of the second workpiece which is remote from the first workpiece.

Method and apparatus of producing a welded connection between the surfaces of two planar workpieces

Illustrated and described is a friction stir welding device for mounting on a handling device. The object that the forces and moments which have to be absorbed by the handling device during the welding operation in the course of the movement of the friction stir welding tool along the weld seam are independent of the welding operation is achieved by a friction stir welding device with a tool drive, with a mounting element for connection to the handling device, with a friction stir welding tool, which is driven by the tool drive in a rotating manner about an axis of rotation, with a counterbearing roller and with a counterbearing drive, the counterbearing drive driving the counterbearing roller in a rotating manner about a counterbearing axis and the circumferential surface of the counterbearing roller being arranged opposite the friction stir welding tool.

A method of connecting a metallic bolt to a plastic work piece is shown and described. The object to provide a method which makes possible a reliable connection between metal workpieces on the one hand and plastic workpieces on the other hand is achieved in that a first plastic work piece and a metallic bolt are provided, and in that the bolt is pressed into a surface of the first plastic workpiece, the bolt being rotated during the pressing-in, and the rotational speed of the bolt being selected in such a way that the first plastic workpiece is plasticized, so that the bolt is anchored in the first plastic workpiece in a positive-locking manner after the rotation is stopped.
