The present invention claims that a carbon black with unique morphological properties provides improved carbon black dispersion and improved rubber compound properties, such as improved fatigue life and abrasion resistance. The carbon black of current invention has a ratio of aggregate size HI and particle size HI greater than 1.70, the surface area STSA of 100-180 M/g and the structure OAN less than 140 cc/100 g.

Carbonaceous material with dissociated aggregate size and particle size distribution and improved dispersibility

A carbon black with a &#x394;D50/M greater than about 0.9 was produced. The carbon black has an aggregate heterogeneity index (HI) via QTM of greater than about 2.3. The carbon black has a &#x394;D50 via DCP of greater than about 0.07 &#x3bc;m. The QTM-HI of the present carbon black is unique for N100-200 series carbon blacks, as is the &#x394;D50. The carbon black is a N200 carbon black with an oil absorption number (OAN) less than about 135 ml/100 g and a HI of greater than about 2.3. The carbon black is also a N200 carbon black with an oil absorption number (OAN) less than about 135 ml/100 g and a &#x394;D50 of greater than about 0.07 &#x3bc;m. The present invention also relates to a polymeric composition and to tires comprising a carbon black of the present invention.

Carbonaceous material with broad aggregate size distribution and improved dispersibility

A pigment dispersion of enhanced viscosity and heat stability characteristics for use in coating systems is provided. The pigment dispersions generally comprise a pigment carrier, a pigment of the type having a hydrophilic surface, and a surfactant functional as a dispersant in a relatively non polar matrix and which is present on the surface of the pigment in an effective amount. Pigment carriers include water-based carriers and organic solvent-based carriers. Finished coatings having improved viscosity and heat stability are also provided. The finished coatings comprise a coating base and the surfactant treated pigments. Such pigments include iron oxide pigments yellow iron oxide pigment, black iron oxide pigment, divalent ferrite pigments, zinc ferrite pigment, and magnesium ferrite pigment. Such surfactants include trimethylol propane, and trimethylol ethane.

Dispersion of pigments in resins and coatings systems

There is provided a pigment concentrate dispersible in plastics and having a substantially improved characteristic extrusion screen life, comprising a dispersion in a resin carrier of an inorganic pigment of the type having a hydrophilic surface, having on its surface in an effective amount a surfactant of the type characterized by an attached polar terminus, in relation to the surface of the pigment, and an unattached nonpolar terminus, in relation to the carrier resin, or of the type characterized by a high molecular weight surface blocking agent. Such pigments include iron oxide pigments, red iron oxide pigment, yellow iron oxide pigment, black iron oxide pigment, divalent ferrite pigments, zinc ferrite pigment, and magnesium ferrite pigment. Such surfactants include dimethyl polysiloxane, isopropyl triisostearoyl titanate, trimethylol propane, trimethylol ethane, and low molecular weight polyethylene. In a preferred concentrate, pigment loading is about 50%, the pigment comprises red iron oxide, the carrier comprises low density polyethylene, and the surfactant comprises trimethylol propane or trimethylol ethane with a treatment level of 0.5% by weight of pigment.
