Device for controlling at least one throttle cross-section at a control

To provide ignition energy to respective spark plugs of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine (ICE) without a distributor, winding groups, each including a primary and secondary winding, are located on respective core portions of an iron core, which core portions are coupled together by zones (a, b, c) of high magnetic reluctance, or low magnetic flux conductivity; the winding groups can be located on L cores (16, 17) with two high-reluctance gaps between the ends of the facing L cores (FIG. 1) or on a common U core (28, 30, 29) with a cross yoke (31) spaced from the ends of the legs of the U. Interruption of current flow through the primary of any one of the winding groups will then not induce in the secondary of the other winding group a voltage high enough to cause spark-over at the other secondary; free-wheeling diodes (14, 22), connected across the primaries, can suppress current flow in the primary not being interrupted; and diodes (12, 13; 25, 26), serially connected with spark plugs, likewise suppress spurious spark-over.

To provide for extended true running of the distributor shaft and prevent wear on relatively movable mechanical components within the distributor, such as a shaft and bearings, a centrifugal spark advance/retard mechanism, or the like, the relatively movable parts are included in the lubricating circuit of the engine, for example by being connected to the pressure lubrication system of the engine or located to be exposed to oil mist in the engine compartment and arising upon operation of the engine, so that the relatively movable parts are constantly lubricated by the engine lubricating system.

An engine driven rotor has pairs of arms of different lengths passing by the stator core teeth with respectively different clearances. The stator teeth carry pick-up coils that are connected in series-aiding relation. Although the stator teeth are uniformly spaced, the rotor arms, that are equal in number to the stator teeth, have the longer pair angularly offset from equiangular relation to the shorter pair in such a way that when the rotor moves in its normal direction, a weak pulse is followed by a stronger one and this pattern is repeated four times per revolution. The output of the coils is supplied to a threshold switch, which will be triggered on the second of the pair of pulses at low rotation speeds of the rotor and on the first of the pair of pulses at high speeds.

To reduce the axial length of distributor-breaker assemblies and to provide for reliable placing of a second upright bearing for the distributor shaft, a holding plate to which a bearing is floatingly attached is clamped in the distributor housing by means of a claw clamp, tightened by a transverse plate against itself and against a shoulder formed in the inner side wall of the distributor, the claw clamp being formed as a partly circumferential ring seated in a groove of the distributor.

To prevent corrosion and provide for better relative movement of parts which move only slightly but are exposed to extremes in ambient operating conditions, a tubular piece of plastic material, typically Polyvinylidenfluoride or a polyamide, is drawn over the inner element of a relatively slidable pair, which may, for example be a distributor shaft, the distributor breaker cam, or distributor bearing pins, to cover the surface thereof engaged in slidable contact.

To provide for reliable connection under conditions of extremes of shock and vibration, an axially acting contact spring is located between the movable electrode, typically connected to the wire, and the fixed electrode, then forming the connection in the distributor cap, the spring forming a current carrying contact element while exerting axially directed bias force; releasable holding means releasably, positively connect the cable and the socket of the distributor cap so that the spring can act as a resilient contact element. These releasable means may be either magnetic force means, a bayonet connection, a snap catch, or a collar fixed to the wire which is secured by a holder to the cap, the spring, in all instances, being interposed between the central connecting wire of the cable and the fixed terminal within the distributor cap.

An annular permanent magnet affixed to the bottom of the timing shift plate of an ignition distributor exerts a force attracting the timing shift plate to the fixed carrier plate on which the timing shift plate is supported by spacers. Another permanent magnet is set into the inner flange of the carrier plate in the neighborhood of the cam-following portion of the interruptor to attract the nesting inner flange of the timing shift plate, so as to prevent the play between these flanges which form the bearing for the timing shift plate from interfering with the ignition timing. The timing shift plate and carrier plate are made of iron and there is only a small gap between the outer peripheries to provide a return magnetic circuit.
