Generally, aspects of embodiments of the invention include cable separator spline which comprises a plurality of longitudinally extending walls joined along a central axis of the spline, and a plurality of longitudinally extending channels. Each longitudinally extending channel is defined by a pair of the longitudinally extending walls, where the pair of longitudinally extending walls includes a first wall substantially thicker than a second wall. Other embodiments include a cable separator spline assembly having a plurality of longitudinally extending walls joined along a central axis of the spline, and a plurality of longitudinally extending channels. Each longitudinally extending channel is defined by a pair of the longitudinally extending walls, wherein a pair of opposing longitudinally extending walls have defined through them a common gap defining two separate sub-splines having T-shaped cross-sections. Embodiments of the invention feature various spline shapes as well as various internal structures and materials.

Twisted pair cable with cable separator

Method of making a twisted conductor wire unit in which each wire of the pair is individually insulated. The twisted pair is provided with an outer extruded polymeric layer while a vacuum is applied to the pair at the extrusion position. The vacuum draws the polymeric layer down onto the pair and forces the insulated wires together along the length of the unit. The vacuum is insufficient to produce substantial longitudinal indentations in the polymer layer. This avoids spaces being provided between the insulated wires in the finished structure and provides a substantially constant distance between the wires to improve electrical and cross-talk characteristics.

An electrical cable having a jacket surrounding a metal shield which, in turn, surrounds the cable core. The jacket comprises a polyolefin with a modifier provided by a carboxylic acid or anhydride thereof with the jacket lying in intimate overall contact with an outer surface of the shield and being bonded by the modifier throughout the overall contact areas to the shield.

A cable for use as aerial service wire having a core of conductors and a load carrier in the form of a plurality of spaced apart tensile reinforcing members spaced from the core as a group laterally on one side of the core. Part of the jacket surrounds the core and is interconnected to another jacket part surrounding the group of filaments. The jacket part surrounding the filament group has a width greater than its thickness so that it may fit within a wedge clamp for stringing purposes. The two parts of the jacket are capable of being separated between the filament group and the core to allow a wedge clamp to be fitted. For this purpose, the cable may be fitted with a non-adherent tape inside the jacket and between the jacket parts with the jacket parts interconnecting around edges of the tape.

Fire retardant and water blocking material for cables having an admixture, in parts by weight, of 100 parts of amorphous polypropylene, which is in a continuous phase throughout the composition, from 10 to 70 parts of hydrated inorganic oxide or hydroxide material, and an organic halogenated material and antimony trioxide, the aggregate of the organic halogenated material and antimony trioxide being from 5 to 30 parts.

In a method of applying a jacket to a metal shield of a cable, the jacket comprises a polyolefin having a modifier provided by a carboxylic acid or its anhydride. As the jacket extrudate passes onto the shield, air pressure is lowered at the surface of the shield to provide intimate overall contact between jacket and shield. Heating, additional to that provided by the extrudate, is employed to raise the outside bonding temperature of the shield up to at least the bonding temperature of the modifier so as to provide a bond between the jacket and the shield.

A telecommunications cable having no metal sheath, but having a plurality of equally pre-tensioned and inextensible tensile members embedded in the cable jacket. These members are spaced apart around the core and extend longitudinally of the cable to apply an axially compressive force upon the jacket. The members may be glass fibers and each member is preferably a roving of fibers. The filaments may be coated with a material which sticks them to the jacket and the core may be filled with a moisture blocking material.

Providing plastic insulation on an electrical conductor in which the conductor, enclosed in an oversize tube, is passed through a fluid and through an annular crystal of a piezoelectric material immersed in the fluid. During passage of tube and conductor, the crystal is subjected to electric current to cause alternating expansion and contraction of the crystal. Pressure shockwaves are produced by this expansion and contraction and the shockwaves are focussed upon the pass line of the tube and conductor to cause localized inward deformations of the tube into engagement with the conductor to form spaced annular depressions in the tube. In preferred arrangements, apparatus has an extruder immediately upstream of the crystal so that the plastic tube is in a heated and softened condition during its deformation. A focussing means is required in the apparatus for focussing shockwaves on the pass line. In a practical arrangement, the focussing is provided by an annulus of wave transmitting material which has a concave inner surface facing the pass line.

Provision of plastic insulation upon an electrical conductor

Method and apparatus to maintain homogeneity in a mixture of a fluid carrier and a quantity of magnetically permeable particles in which the mixture within a cylindrical container is subjected to the influence of a magnetic field which rotates around the container, and which at any instant is centered about its own axis lying outside the container. The field has an axis with directional components in a circumferential sense and in the axial sense of the container. In the apparatus, the field is produced by electrical coils connected for multiphase operation, side-by-side around the container and each coil is in a circumferentially and axially inclined relationship to the container.

Maintaining homogeneity in a mixture

In a method of insulating an electrical conductor, the conductor passes upwardly through a coating fluid and a die means which is carried in a vertical position by a supporting fluid force. This force is provided by the supporting force of the fluid or a magnetic force which holds the die in suspension. Freedom for horizontal movement of the die is provided to enable it to move in a manner corresponding to any lateral movement of the conductor, this die movement being controlled by hydrodynamic forces between conductor and die to maintain the concentricity of a fluid layer formed on the conductor.

A fluidizable bed structure with a rigid support for carrying a bed of fluidizable powder, the support being at least two inches deep and having its porosity formed by interstices which reduce in total area from the lower surface of the support to its upper or support surface. A fluidizable bed structure is also described having a support which has an electrode contacting it with the depth of the support from its upper surface to the electrode sufficient to prevent arcing from the electrode to the upper surface.

An electrode for a fluidizable bed coating apparatus comprising a plurality of electrically conductive tubes and a tube carrier. The tubes extend from the carrier and have free ends at which there is a concentration in intensity of an electric field when the tubes are connected into an electric circuit, and the tubes channel fluidizing gas through them and through the concentrations in intensity of the electric field.

A device for filling the interstices of a multi-stranded cable with powder, comprising an outer tubular housing and a concentric inner tube with an annular chamber therebetween for moving powder filler from an inlet to the outlet end of the device. Air is deliverable under pressure to the outlet end of the device to disperse the powder as a cloud.

A device for filling the interstices of multi-stranded cable with powder, comprising an outer cylindrical housing and a concentric inner tube with an annular chamber between them. The tube at one end carries a coaxial impeller located at the outlet end portion of the housing. Powder is fed into the chamber and a helical screw pushes the powder onto the impeller which is rotated to distribute the powder onto conductors passing from a strander around the device and into a closing die.
