It is provided a process for the preparation of bimatoprost, which comprises: a) reacting a compound of formula (III) with ethylamine in the presence of a suitable solvent; and b) deprotecting compound obtained in step a) to obtain bimatoprost, wherein Ris selected from (C-C)alkyl, (CC)haloalkyl, (C-C)alkenyl, (C-C)haloalkenyl, (C-C)alkoxy(C-C)alkyl, aryl, (C-C)alkylaryl, allyl, &#x2014;(CH&#x2014;CH&#x2014;O)&#x2014;CHwherein n=1, 2, 3 or 4, and &#x2014;CH(O&#x2014;CH&#x2014;CH); Ris selected from H, (C-C)alkyl, (C-C)haloalkyl, (C-C)alkenyl, (C-C)haloalkenyl, (C-C)alkoxy(CrC)alkyl, aryl, (C-C)alkylaryl, allyl; or, alternatively, Rand Rtaken together are selected from &#x2014;CH&#x2014;CH&#x2014;CH&#x2014;, &#x2014;CH&#x2014;CH&#x2014;, &#x2014;O&#x2014;CH&#x2014;CH&#x2014;, and &#x2014;O&#x2014;CH&#x2550;CH&#x2014;. There are also provided intermediates useful in such preparation process.
