The present invention relates to a method for the manufacture of a (co)polycarbonate comprising reacting tetrabromo bisphenol A and optionally one or more bisphenol comonomer(s) with phosgene wherein the tetrabromo bisphenol A contains an amount of tetrabromo bisphenol A dimer of at most 3.0 wt. % based on the weight of the tetrabromo bisphenol A, determined after heat treating the tetrabromo bisphenol A at a temperature of 260° C. for a period of 15 minutes.

A copolycarbonate optical article comprises a polycarbonate composition including: a copolycarbonate having: 2 to 60 mol % of phthalimidine carbonate units, 2 to 90 mol % of high heat carbonate units, and optionally 2 to 60 mol % of bisphenol A carbonate units. The copolycarbonate has less than 100 ppm of each of phthalimidine, high heat bisphenol, and bisphenol A monomers, and less than 5 ppm of various ions, and is prepared from monomers each having a purity of at least 99.6%. The polycarbonate composition has a glass transition temperature of 200&#xb0; C. to and a yellowness index of less than 30.

Phthalimidine copolycarbonate optical articles, articles formed therefrom, and methods of manufacture

Methods for screening molecules or moieties for their ability to crosslink are disclosed. An aromatic carbonate, aromatic ester, or aliphatic ester group is attached to the molecule to mimic the presence of a polymer. A solution of the modified molecule is irradiated, and the first-order kinetic rate constant is measured. If the rate constant is high enough or a threshold amount of the molecule is consumed, a polymer is synthesized using the molecule/moiety as an endcap or co-monomer. The polymer is irradiated, and the increase in crosslink density and the gel formation percentage are determined. These parameters, if high enough, indicate the suitability of the molecule/moiety to act as a crosslinking agent, particularly for polycarbonates. Alternatively, the molecule/moiety may be identified as suitable solely by its first-order kinetic rate constant.

Methods of identifying crosslinking molecules for polymers

Photoactive additives are disclosed. The additive includes a benzophenone having at least one substituent that comprises a divalent linker and a linking group, wherein the linking group is a carboxyl group, ester group, or acid halide group. The additive can be a polymer, an oligomer, or a compound. When added to a base polymeric resin, the photoactive additive permits crosslinking upon exposure to ultraviolet light.
