A sub-hogel configuration for a high-definition light field display that can be used in the design of optical device and three-dimensional light field display technology. Three-dimensional holographic pixels (hogels) composed of monochromatic sub-hogels and a designed metasurface act as a directional optical element for a light field display. The sub-hogel structure design and method is suited for an achromatic metasurface to provide directional pixels for multiple view light field colored displays.

System and method for generating a sub-hogel light field

A microcavity pixel design and fabrication method for an organic light emitting diode (OLED) array with a high aperture ratio suitable for a light field display. This is achieved by laterally overlapping intermediate electrodes and optical filler layers, reducing the lateral spacing. The OLED layers in the design have a uniform white OLED stack, allowing each layer to be deposited across the OLED array, simplifying fabrication. The optical path length for each subpixel's optical microcavity is optimized through the thickness of the optical filler layers, allowing the white OLED stack to be uniform, reducing fabrication complexities.

A multiplexed light field projector device and a multiplexed light field display to output a light field image is described. The projector has a projector base with a projection optical system configured to output light rays to form a projected image, a collimating optical system configured for collimation of the projected image light rays to form a second projected image, which is directed to a display optical system to produce a light field image. Light field projector devices or alternative projector devices may be used individually or in combination with one or more other projectors which can be arranged to form a multiplexed direct projection light field display. The arrangement of projector devices may have an individual or shared display optical system.

A microcavity pixel design and structure allowing for tuning the optical cavity length of the microcavity of a microcavity pixel structure. This is achieved by including an intermediate electrode in the device which has an overhang region to form a connecting area to a bottom electrode, alleviating design restrictions in material type and dimensions throughout the optical microcavity tuning process. A method for the fabrication of a multi-colored microcavity pixel array facilitating the use of blanket deposition methods for select layers within a microcavity pixel structure.

Direct projection multiplexed light field display

A direct projection light field display comprising an array of projectors for direct projection of a light field. The overall design and incorporation of additional optics achieve the optimal light distribution and small pixel size to produce a high definition, 3D display. The architecture of the direct projection light field display has low a brightness requirement for each projector, resulting in an increased projector density, decreased system, and a decreased power requirement, while producing a high-definition light field.

A light field projector device is described which outputs a light field. The projector has a projector base with a projection optical system configured to output light rays to form a projected image, a collimating optical system configured for collimation of the projected image light rays to form a second projected image, which is directed to a display optical system to produce a light field image. Light field projector devices may be used individually or in combination with one or more other projectors which can be arranged to form a direct projection light field display. The arrangement of light field projector devices may have an individual or shared display optical system. The projector device is designed to provide high pixel density, providing an image that looks crisp and unpixellated.

The present disclosure relates to a directional pixel for a high-angular resolution, wide field of view, multiple view display. The design teaches a directional pixel comprising a substrate, one or more pixel driving circuits, one or more nano- or micro-scale subpixels, and one or more directional optical guiding surfaces, wherein each of said one or more subpixels is comprised of a light emitting device emitting a light beam and an optical microcavity housing said light emitting device. The optical microcavity is comprised of a plurality of reflective surfaces to specifically manipulate and tune said light beam, wherein one or more of said reflective surfaces is a light propagating reflective surface which propagates said light beam out of said microcavity, and said light propagating reflective surface is connected to said one or more directional optical guiding surfaces to direct said light beam at a specific angle. A high-angular resolution, multiple-view light-field display is created by deploying a plurality of directional pixels into a directional pixel array system.
