An assembly includes an applicator, which includes a housing defining a gap configured to receive an end effector jaw of a surgical stapler. The applicator also includes a platform positioned within the gap. The assembly also includes a buttress assembly having a first length and positioned on the platform. The assembly further includes a trimming feature presented by the applicator or the buttress assembly, and configured to facilitate trimming of the buttress assembly from the first length to a predetermined second length.

Adjuncts for use with surgical stapling instruments

Various cartridge assemblies for surgical instruments are provided. Cartridge assemblies can include active sensors for applying stimuli to a tissue clamped by an end effector of the surgical instrument and a circuit configured to determine a tissue type of the tissue according to a change in the tissue parameter detected by the sensor resulting from a stimulus from the active element. Cartridge assemblies can also include physical features and/or stored data that identify the cartridge. Surgical instruments further can be configured to resolve conflicts when the physical features and/or stored data are not consistent with each other in their identification of the cartridge type.

A method of compressing tissue during a surgical procedure is disclosed. The method comprises obtaining a surgical instrument comprising an end effector, wherein the end effector comprises a first jaw and a second jaw, establishing a communication pathway between the surgical instrument and a surgical hub, and inserting the surgical instrument into a surgical site. The method further comprises compressing tissue between the first jaw and the second jaw, determining a location of the compressed tissue with respect to at least one of the first jaw and the second jaw, communicating the determined location of the compressed tissue to the surgical hub, and displaying the determined location of the compressed tissue on a visual feedback device.

In general, systems, methods, and devices for modeling air leaks in lungs are provided. In an exemplary embodiment, the systems, methods, and devices provide a model to allow for simulation of negative and positive pressure ventilation modes in vitro, which may allow for evaluation and investigation of pathologies and interventions. In addition to ventilation functions the model includes submersion of the lung sample in fluid inside a chamber and cycling the fluid through a collection system to collect air leaked from the lung. The model can allow for quantification and visual observation of air leaks in real time.

Compressible adjuncts for use with a surgical cartridge are provided. In one exemplary embodiment, a compressible adjunct includes a biocompatible adjunct material that is configured to be releasably retained on a staple cartridge and that is configured to be delivered to tissue by deployment of staples in the cartridge. The adjunct material includes a lattice main structure having at least one absorbable sub-structure formed in the lattice main structure, the at least one absorbable sub-structure configured to control fluid movement through the adjunct material such that the fluid movement impacts healing of tissue adjacent the adjunct material when the adjunct material is in a tissue deployed state. Compressible adjuncts with fluid control features

Compressible adjuncts for use with a staple cartridge are provided. In one exemplary embodiment, a compressible adjunct includes a non-fibrous adjunct material formed of at least one fused bioabsorbable polymer and configured to be releasably retained on a cartridge and configured to be delivered to tissue by deployment of staples in the cartridge. The adjunct material includes a lattice macrostructure having a plurality of drug delivery microstructures formed in the lattice macrostructure, in which each drug delivery microstructure has drug disposed therein. The plurality of drug delivery microstructures are configured to encapsulate the drug to thereby prevent drug release until the plurality of drug delivery microstructures are at least one of thermally ruptured while the adjunct material is stapled to tissue and mechanically ruptured in response to at least one of clamping, stapling, and cutting of the adjunct material. Stapling assemblies for use with a surgical stapler are also provided.

Compressible adjuncts with drug release features

A surgical system is disclosed including an end effector, a control circuit, a closure member, and a firing member. The end effector includes a first jaw, a second jaw, and an electrode. The first jaw is rotatable relative to the second jaw between an open position and a close position to capture tissue therebetween. The electrode is configured to conduct a sub-therapeutic RF current to the tissue. The control circuit is operably coupled to the electrode. The control circuit is configured to measure impedance of the tissue over time based on the sub-therapeutic RF current. The closure member is configured to move the first jaw towards the second jaw at a closure rate based on the impedance of the tissue. The firing member is configured to move within the end effectors towards a fired position at a firing rate based on the impedance of the tissue.

A buttress assembly for use with a surgical stapled site has a buttress and an adhesive on one side of the buttress. The adhesive on the buttress is applied in a pattern where the adhesive extends near or along the edges of the buttress while a center region of the buttress remains relatively free of adhesive. The adhesive is applied such that it extends continuously along the buttress and has a height such that the adhesive creates a sealing attachment with an end effector. The adhesive can be applied in an uneven distribution such that there is more adhesive applied at one end of the buttress than the other. The adhesive can also be applied in a symmetric or asymmetric distribution about a longitudinal axis of the buttress.

A staple cartridge is disclosed. The staple cartridge can have a longitudinal axis and a cartridge body having a deck, wherein a plurality of staple cavities can be defined in the cartridge body. The staple cavities can be arranged in a plurality of patterns, and the patterns can include a first pattern and a second pattern longitudinally offset from the first pattern. The second pattern can be different than the first pattern. The first pattern can consist of a longitudinally-repetitive pattern of angularly-oriented staple cavities and/or the second pattern can consist of parallel staple cavities.

A surgical instrument that includes a first jaw and a second jaw that is coupled to the first jaw for selective pivotal travel relative thereto between a fully open position and a fully closed position. An axially movable closure member is selectively axially movable in a closure direction to move the second jaw from the fully open position to the fully closed position and in an axial opening direction to move the second jaw from the fully closed position to the fully open position. The axially movable closure member includes a first jaw opening feature that is configured to apply a first jaw opening motion to the second jaw and a second jaw opening feature is axially spaced from the first jaw opening feature and is configured to apply a second jaw opening motion to the second jaw.
