According to embodiments of the present disclosure, a solid oxide fuel cell includes a cathode, an anode, and a solid oxide electrolyte between the anode and the cathode. The solid oxide electrolyte includes a solid oxide, and the anode includes a porous scaffold. The porous scaffold includes a solid oxide having metal-based catalysts disposed on one or more surfaces of the porous scaffold. In embodiments, at least one ammonia decomposition layer is disposed proximate the surface of the porous scaffold and is configured to convert ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen for subsequent feed of hydrogen to the anode. The ammonia decomposition layer also includes a metal decomposition catalyst.

Direct ammonia-fed solid oxide fuel cell and methods for making the same

According to embodiments of the present disclosure, a method of producing hydrogen in a fuel cell includes passing ammonia under pressure to an anode of the fuel cell, where the ammonia is decomposed into nitrogen gas and protons. The fuel cell comprises a cathode, the anode, and a proton-conducting electrolyte between the anode and the cathode. The anode includes an ammonia decomposition catalyst. The method further includes passing the purging the nitrogen from the anode, passing the protons through the proton-conducting electrolyte to the cathode, and passing the electrons from the anode to the cathode, wherein the protons and the electrons react to produce substantially pure hydrogen gas under pressure.

A method of operating a solid oxide fuel cell system may comprise contacting a cathode gas comprising oxygen with a heating element to produce a heated cathode gas, passing the heated cathode gas through a cathode of a solid oxide fuel cell stack to increase the temperature of the solid oxide fuel cell stack to an operation temperature and reduce the oxygen to oxygen anions, and passing an anode gas through an anode of the solid oxide fuel cell stack to initiate the electrochemical oxidation of the oxygen anions within the anode. In one aspect, the invention provides a catalyst for converting diesel type liquid hydrocarbons to methane rich gas. The catalyst includes a nickel component, a cerium oxide component, and gadolinium oxide component. The catalysts provide high conversion, selectivity, and stability compare to the state of the art commercial catalysts. The catalyst compositions can improve the overall fuel cell efficiency for both mobile and stationary fuel cell applications.

Disclosed are a metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell and a method for manufacturing the metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell. The method includes: fixedly joining a metal support to one surface of a unit cell including a fuel electrode, an air electrode and an electrolyte layer interposed between the fuel and air electrodes to fabricate a metal-supported unit cell (S); fixing a first separator to the surface of the metal support opposite to the surface thereof to which the unit cell is joined (S); and assembling the first separator to which the metal-supported unit cell is fixed, an insulating member, a first current collecting member and a second separator (S). In the metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell, the metal support having a hollow portion in place of a mesh type current collector can be securely sealed to the first separator by direct welding to allow the fuel gas and air to be supplied to the unit cell through respective defined flow passages without being mixed or leakage. Due to this construction, the metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell is stable and has high energy production efficiency. Furthermore, the metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell has sufficient mechanical strength, resulting in improved durability and extended service life.

The present invention relates to a fabrication method of a solid oxide fuel cell.
