A pouch type secondary battery which can prevent a cut portion from electrically contacting a protective circuit module, thereby preventing an electrical short circuit and acceleration of corrosion of a core material and enhancing safety includes an electrode assembly having a first electrode plate, a second electrode plate, and a separator; a pouch case made of a flexible material, and having a container, insulated at least on its inner surface and accommodating the electrode assembly, and sealing portions along an edge of the container, the sealing portions including a first sealing portion through which electrode taps of the electrode assembly extend from the pouch case, and a second sealing portion and a third sealing portion respectively positioned at opposite sides of the first sealing portion, the second an third sealing portions being folded at least one time; a protective circuit module connected to the electrode tips and mounted on an outer surface of the first sealing portion; and a short circuit protector formed in at least one among the first through third sealing portions to prevent an electrical short circuit between each sealing portion and the protective circuit module.

Pouch type secondary battery

A battery unit and a lithium secondary battery employing the same are provided. The battery unit includes a positive electrode plate having a positive current collector and a positive active material layer formed on at least one plane of the positive current collector, a positive electrode lead electrically connected with the positive current collector, a negative electrode plate having a negative current collector and a negative active material layer formed on at least one plane of the negative current collector, a negative electrode lead electrically connected with the negative current collector, and a separator interposed between the positive electrode plate and the negative electrode plate, having a width greater than that of each electrode plate, and having different widths of protruding portions which stick out on either side of the electrode plate.

Battery unit and lithium secondary battery employing the same

A battery unit and a lithium secondary battery employing the same are provided. The battery unit includes a positive electrode plate having a positive current collector and a positive active material layer formed on at least one plane of the positive current collector, a positive electrode lead electrically connected with the positive current collector, a negative electrode plate having a negative current collector and a negative active material layer formed on at least one plane of the negative current collector, a negative electrode lead electrically connected with the negative current collector, and a separator interposed between the positive electrode plate and the negative electrode plate, having a width greater than that of each electrode plate, and having different widths of protruding portions which stick out on either side of the electrode plate. Since the design margins of protruding portions of a separator which stick out on either side of each electrode plate are made different from each other, deformation of the separator due to heat applied during heat fusion can be prevented. Accordingly, electrical contact between electrode plates having different polarities can be prevented, thereby improving the stability of a battery.

Separator configuration for a battery

A pouch-type lithium secondary battery includes a battery unit having a positive plate, a separator, and a negative plate; a plurality of electrode tabs drawn from the positive and negative plates, respectively; a case having a space for receiving the battery unit and upper and lower sealing surfaces which are thermally fused to each other; a short-circuit prevention tape attached along the upper and lower sealing surfaces; and a polymer material coated on at least a portion of each electrode tab corresponding to the upper and lower sealing surfaces. A portion of the insulating tape exposed outside the sealing surface of the case is extended and the extended portion of the insulating tape comes in contact with the end portion of the sealing surface after being folded. Therefore, preventing an electrical short circuit between the electrode tab and the intermediate layer of the metal case is achieved.

Pouch-type lithium secondary battery

An electrolyte for a lithium secondary battery which has a non-aqueous organic solvent including a &#x3b3;-butyrolactone and optionally a cyclic carbonate, an ester compound having an electron withdrawing group, and at least two salts. The lithium secondary battery including the electrolyte has good safety and good storage characteristics at high temperature.

A pouch-type lithium secondary battery includes a battery unit having a positive plate, a separator, and a negative plate; a plurality of electrode tabs, drawn from the positive and negative plates, respectively; a case, formed with a space receiving the battery unit and with upper and lower sealing surfaces thermally fused to each other; and an insulating tape wrapping the electrode tabs, wherein a portion of the insulating tape interposed between the upper and lower sealing surfaces is thermally fused to the upper and lower sealing surfaces, and an end portion of the insulating tape is exposed outside the case together with the electrode tabs and positioned outside the upper or lower sealing surface after being folded. A portion of the insulating tape exposed outside the sealing surface of the case is extended and the extended portion of the insulating tape comes in contact with the end portion of the sealing surface after being folded. Therefore, preventing an electrical short circuit between the electrode tab and the intermediate layer of the metal case is achieved.

A battery unit including an electrode unit including a positive electrode plate, a separator, and a negative electrode plate, wherein the positive electrode plate, the separator, and the negative electrode plate are disposed in sequential order; electrode leads extending from each of the positive and negative electrode plates of the electrode unit; and a finishing tape provided on an outermost surface of the electrode unit, including an adhesive layer having a low adhesive strength, and a polymer film layer coated with the adhesive layer, wherein the finishing tape is detachably attached to the electrode unit so as to detach in response to the electrode unit deforming.
